
Kasargod, May 23: Nearly a week after a 19-year-old girl was abducted from her residence at Alambadi, near here, the police have arrested six persons.
The police arrested Hakeem, 29, said to be the girl's former lover; and Saleem, 29, Ashraf, 23, Farook, 28, Hussain, 33 and Musarulah, 21, all hired gang members hailing from the district, said Deputy Superintendent of Police T.P. Renjith, who led the investigation.
The gang was involved in various criminal cases. The gang abducted the girl who was engaged to be married with another person, by barging into her house when all the male members of the family had gone for Friday prayers.
The accused attacked the women of the family who resisted the abduction, Mr. Renjith said.
The girl was first taken to Hakeem's relative's place at Kottodi, under the Rajapuram police station limits, and was later shifted to a house at Badiadkka.
The police got a vital lead after managing to establish contact with one of the gang members. The gang demanded Rs.2 lakh as ransom for the release of the girl, but were traced with the help of the cyber cell.
The arrest was registered on Wednesday.
The accused were charged under various provisions of IPC, including section 384 (extortion), were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here on Thursday.
The girl was sent with her family members.
