Mangaluru, Nov 5: Commuters to Mangaluru International Airport will have to wait until the New Year for the exit road, closed for traffic for more than two years, to get ready as a concrete road.
The stretch of road being upgraded by Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL) was expected to be ready by last May. But the government agency has not been able to get it ready as expected.
Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel has said that he would schedule the inauguration of the exit road on January 1, 2016 in concurrence with the district in-charge minister.
The MP gave this assurance at the Dakshina Kannada District-level Vigilance and Supervision Committee meeting here, after an official of Karnataka Road Development Corporation Ltd. (KRDCL), that is executing the road work, said the construction would get completed by December-end.
Presiding over the meeting, Mr. Kateel expressed displeasure over the abnormal delay in the construction of the road, which should have eased commuting to and from the airport considerably. KRDCL’s track record has been pathetic, the MP remarked.
The official said issues with regard to land acquisition and underground water springs delayed the work. The agency has addressed both the issues now and the work is progressing well, he said.
Started in 2012, the work on the 1.2-km exit road has missed many deadlines. As the air traffic has increased considerably over the years through the airport, movement of vehicles to and from the airport too has increased tremendously. In addition, MIA has also been handling cargo requiring movement of cargo-laden vehicles to the airport and the existing road has been found to be insufficient.
