Bengaluru, Jun 19: A college drop-out, who befriended a teenage girl belonging to an affluent family on social media, has been arrested on charge of blackmailing and extorting Rs 7 lakh from her.

The accused is Rahul Sampath aka Rahul Kumar Sampath, a resident of Banashankari, south Bengaluru. Son of a film producer from Sandalwood, Rahul, a college dropout, would befriend rich teenage girls by approaching them on social media sites, police said.
According to the victim, an 18-year-old girl, who studies in a college in east Bengaluru, Rahul sent her a friend request on Facebook around a year ago and the two grew close in a short span of time.
“Rahul said his father is a big producer of Kannada movies and he too would become an actor one day. He'd often take me out or for long drives. Slowly, he started clicking pictures of us,” the girl told police.
The girl said Rahul would hug and kiss her despite her resisting his moves. “He started demanding money saying he needs to invest in films. When I refused, he threatened me saying he would upload my pictures on social media and defame me. Fearing the consequences, I gave him Rs 7 lakh in instalments,” she told police
The girl's parents sensed something amiss as their daughter was spending a lot of money for no obvious reason. "The girl finally opened up to her mother. She and her parents approached us and we arrested Rahul on Friday; he's in judicial custody," said police, adding, "We found pictures of girls on Rahul's mobile and laptop, which we have deleted."
