Bengaluru, Feb 14: The first phase of polling for taluk and zilla panchayat elections in Karnataka was marred by incidents of violence in some parts.

In the first phase of elections, the voting was held in the districts of Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Ramanagara, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Belagavi, Haveri, Bagalakot, Uttara Kannada, Dharwad and Gadag. Bengaluru Urban (North, North additional, South, East, Anekal) recorded 69.29 pc, Bengaluru Rural (Hoskote, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, Nelamangala) 83.84 pc polling.

Workers of the BJP and the Congress clashed at Sooranagollarahatti village in Chitradurga taluk during elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats in Chitradurga district. Nine people were injured in the incident.

Hanumanthareddy, brother of the Congress candidate for the Guddadarangavvanahalli ZP seat G?T?Babureddy, and party worker Manjunath were severely injured in the incident. Four workers of the BJP were also injured in the violence.

Cases have been registered at the Turuvanuru police station. Barring this incident, the voting was peaceful elsewhere in the district. At Swandenahalli booth in Tumakuru taluk, workers of JD(S) and Congress clashed an hour before the end of polling. The police resorted to mild lathi charge and brought the situation under control. The polling picked up pace in Davangere district only after 3 pm. The voting was uneventful in the district.

Tension in Dharwad

Tension prevailed in Hebballi, Dharwad district, following the arrest of BJP candidate Yogishgouda Goudar, with authorities briefly detaining BJP leaders Pralhad Joshi and Jagadish Shettar who demanded that Gowda be released immediately.

Home Guard assaulted

A home guard was assaulted in Donavada village in Chikkodi taluk of Belagavi when he tried to stop distribution of money to voters. Also, two tahsildars were subjected to medical examination on the suspicion that they were inebriated in Khanapur taluk in the district.

Lukewarm response

The elections drew a lukewarm response in the booths of Haveri district. Drought and farmer suicides seemed to have cast a shadow on the polls.

People in Thimmenahalli of Byadagi taluk boycotted the election. Residents at Kurubamallura in Savanur taluk boycotted the polls, but relented later. Residents of Thimmenahalli in Byadagi taluk did not vote, in protest against the polling booth being too far from their village (at Belakeri which is one km away). The assurance by additional DC?T?Yogish that the village would have a booth in the next poll did not move the voters.

Bagalkot district recorded 64.56 per cent in the election, according to preliminary reports. The percentage has registered a dip from 70 per cent recorded in the 2011 ZP, TP elections. It is said that the ongoing jowar harvesting had hit the polling percentage.

Evening enthusiasm in U-K

Election to 39 ZP seats and 130 TP constituencies passed off peacefully in Uttara Kannada district. Voting was just 46.52 till 3 pm, but gathered pace thereafter. Youths showed less enthusiasm in the polling. The electronic voting machine developed a snag after a few hours at booth number 12 in Chittakula. The machine was replaced and voting resumed.

Shivamogga

Barring the incidents of poll boycott in some villages and group clash, the polling was peaceful during the elections to 31 ZP seats and 97 TP seats in the district. According to the district administration, the district witnessed 71.6 per cent voter turnout.

Belagavi

Voters turned up enthusiastically at polling booths for polling in Belagavi on Saturday. The district recorded an approximate 71 per cent turnout. Polling continued in some of the stations even after the scheduled closing time of 5 pm ended with voters standing in queue being allowed to cast their votes.

Bengaluru, Apr 29: HD Revanna, the father of Karnataka MP Prajwal Revanna, has accused rivals of creating a conspiracy out of "old videos", a comment that is likely to raise a bigger row over his son's alleged link to the obscene videos.

A woman yesterday filed a police case against Prajwal Revanna and his father over alleged sexual assault. Prajwal Revanna, the Janata Dal (Secular) MP and grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, has denied the latest allegations and also filed a police complaint over circulation of obscene videos, which he said were morphed.

Prajwal Revanna left for Germany on Saturday morning after voting in the Lok Sabha elections a day earlier.

"I know what kind of conspiracy is going on. I am not someone who'll get scared and run away. They have released something that was 4-5 years old. Expelling him from the party is left to the party high command," HD Revanna said.

When it was pointed out that an FIR has been registered against him too, he said, "There is politics, I don't want to comment. They (Congress) are in government and they will do whatever they want."

"All these things are not just today, the Deve Gowda family in the last 40 years (has been targeted by) Congress. CoD (now CID), Lokayukta probe, we have been facing for the last 40 years... I don't want to react to anything...let them take action in accordance with law," he said, adding that he hasn't spoken to Deve Gowda on the issue.

"Since the special investigation team is looking into the case, I will not react any further," HD Revanna said.

Yesterday, a first information report was filed against the father-son duo on charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the dignity of a woman.

The survivor alleged both sexually assaulted her, and when Revanna's wife was not home, he touched her inappropriately and used to sexually assault her. The complainant alleged Prajwal Revanna also misbehaved with her daughter over a video call. "My daughter blocked his number after repeated calls," the complainant said.

The latest FIR comes when Prajwal Revanna is already in the middle of a controversy after some objectionable videos went viral on social media allegedly involving him.

Prajwal Revanna is seeking a fresh term in the Lok Sabha from as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate from Hassan.

Mangaluru, May 12: In a shocking development, a group of pilgrims which had travelled from Mangaluru International Airport to Saudi Arabia earlier this month, to perform Umrah has alleged that 26,432 Saudi Riyals, which were kept in a bag, have been stolen.

In a complaint submitted to the Bajpe Police, Soukath Banu, wife of Ahmed Iqbal of Ajyad Tours and Travels, said that her husband, Ahmed Iqbal, along with 35 members, planned and scheduled to perform the Umrah and were travelling from Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) via Mumbai to Jeddah.

Soukath Banu had given Ahmed Iqbal 2,000 Saudi Riyals for performing Umrah and other expenses. The group members were also told to bring Saudi Riyals to meet their expenses.

In her plaint, Soukath stated that the group had left for Jeddah on an IndiGo flight via Mumbai, and their return ticket to India was booked for May 13.

At the airport, she said that 26,432 Saudi Riyals were collected in total, and they decided to keep them in baggage that had a lock. Accordingly, it was kept in the bag of Mohammad Badruddin Kadambar. The airport staff had even questioned what he had kept in the bag.

The group reached Jeddah on May 1. To their surprise, Kadambar found that the baggage lock was broken open, the zip was damaged, and cash was stolen upon reaching Jeddah.

DCP (Law and Order) Sidharth Goyal said that following the complaint, one round of CCTV checks was conducted at the MIA along with the CISF personnel. The loading at the MIA was intact.

Further checks have to be carried out at Mumbai and Jeddah Airport as the victim found out that cash was missing only when they got the bag at the final destination, he added.
