Mangalore, Jun 9: Minister for Fisheries K Abhayachadra Jain on Monday carried out an inspection of the engineering projects within the marine fishing harbour at Mangalore Old Port at Bunder and assured the locals that the implementation and development of projects would be done within specified time limit in accordance with the plans.
Speaking to mediapersons after conducting an inspection of uncompleted works at the fishing harbour, he said that the cost of the Rs 57.60-crore expansion and modernisation of the existing fishing harbour at Mangalore Old Port had been revised to Rs 98.25 crores.
Assuring that the undertaken work would be completed on time, he said that the construction of the 90-metre long fishing jetty at Ullal-Kotepura in Mangalore taluk at the cost of Rs 500 crore was under progress, and the Rs 500-crore project of constructing a fishing jetty for ideal berthing at Sultan Battery-Bokkapatna was also underway.
He also assured the locals of undertaking dredging work of the river estuary near the old fishing harbour for the convenience of movement of fishing vessels.
Following the inspection of undertaken projects, Mr Jain distributed facilities such as cheques for a housing scheme, fishing nets, life jackets, fishing requisition kits and ice storage boxes for fishermen under various schemes, in the presence of Mayor of Mangalore City Corporation Mahabala Marla.
Addressing the gathering, he said that greater stress would be given to find a permanent solution for the dredging work of the sea bed at the river estuary, since the normal dredging process was cumbersome.
