
Bhatkal, Oct 7: A tug belonging to a private company sank off the Aligadda beach in Karwar on Monday during an operation. Its five crew members were rescued by another boat.
The tragedy occurred when KB-15, a 10-tonne capacity tugboat, was engaged in towing a heavy molasses-laden ship Reliance-2 from the Baithkol port into the deep waters.
Coastal security police sources said that miscommunication between the captains of the ship and the tugboat resulted in the ship revving up its movement. This caused the tug to capsize.
The crewmembers helplessly jumped into water to save themselves when the tragedy took place.
Fortunately, crew members on board a boat belonging coastal security police which was on patrol, noticed the incident and immediately rushed to the spot. All the five men were rescued.
The rescued are Chandan Ramakant Arundekar from Gokarna, Hanamant Poojary from Gadag, Deepak Narayan Kelaskar, Deepak Muniram from Chhattisgarh and Jagdayal from Jharkhand.
