Mysore, Feb 13: Former Karnataka minister S A Ramdas was on Wednesday booked for trying to commit suicide. Ramdas, a minister in the B S Yeddyurappa government, tried to kill himself within hours of a woman accusing him of sexually harassing her since 2009.
Premakumari, who identified herself as a government clerk, also claimed he married her at his Mysore home two months ago. Before trying to hang himself, Ramdas denied her allegations and said she was trying to blackmail him.
The BJP leader, who is on ventilator, is stable and likely to be shifted to a ward on Thursday, said Apollo Hospital medical superintendent H S Somanath. "Ramdas was brought struggling for life on Tuesday night. We admitted him to ICU," he said.
Quoting the FIR, a police officer said Ramdas's driver Nagendra, the complainant, told police he drove the former minister to his home around 9.30pm. On entering his first-floor room, Ramdas locked it from inside. "I entered his room through a common restroom to find him with a knotted bedsheet around his neck," he said.
"We're trying to find the owner of the property where Ramdas attempted suicide," the cop said. Doctors at the hospital told the police that the former minister was now in a position to speak. "We're yet to record Ramdas's statement," the officer said.
"Following reports from the hospital, we've taken up a case of attempt to commit suicide against Ramdas," said Police commissioner M A Saleem. "It's a medico-legal case booked on the basis of Nagendra's statement. We are investigating what led to his action."
