Mangaluru, May 14: Panic gripped village of Panjikallu in Bantwal Taluk on Wednesday after residents noticed fuel leakage from the Mangaluru-Bengaluru underground pipeline.
Immediately, authorities concerned, including Petronet MHB Ltd., MRPL, fire and emergency services were informed. Residents claimed that though they noticed the leakage last night, authorities did not respond.
The leaked fuel has spread across the region. It has also reached paddy field around 200 meters away.
Petronet MHB Ltd., a joint venture of Petronet India, HPCL, ONGC and Banks, is on the job of identifying the leakage point and rectifying the same. Meanwhile, pumping has been stopped through the pipeline.
The leakage was plugged by late evening and the Petronet authorities resumed test pumping of the fuel from Mangaluru despatch centre, in Bala village, close to MRPL, to check whether the plugging had been properly done.
Only after verifying the safety aspect would they resume full-scale pumping, which had stopped immediately after the leakage was notified, a senior official from an oil company said.
Some villagers suspected that a powerful lighting strike on Tuesday night might have damaged the pipeline and caused leakage.
However, a senior official from an oil company who visited the spot said the leakage was due to a theft attempt. A puncture on the pipeline at least 3 mt below ground level, clearly indicated sophisticated attempt to tap the fuel, he said.
There were instances of tapping the pipeline to steal fuel in the past also, said H.S. Varadarajan, Chief Fire Officer, Mangaluru.
