Mangalore, Aug 28: Think beyond horizon, read voraciously, achieve good command over language… these were the few suggestions given to the postgraduate students of journalism by tv9 senior correspondent and news anchor Hariprasad.
He was speaking after inaugurating the Communication Club at the department of Mass Communication and Journalism, in Mangalore University on Wednesday.
He said that a good journalist should not be inclined to any other ism'. “A journalist's domain must be the society. Once he enters to the profession of Journalism, he should get rid of all the prejudices” he suggested.
Speaking on the current scenario of Kannada media, he said television channels were forced to telecast what people want instead of what was needed for them. Since channel survives with its TRP, it has become mandatory to provide what people want to watch, he said.
“The decline in reading habit among journalism students has had its impact on the quality of news. Though there are opportunities, students are not making right use of it. Though they learn something on “communication” in classes, they never truly open up to the media world, which is not a good development” he said.
Presiding over the programme P B Harish Rai, President, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalist Union, said that only journalism is considered as a “thrilling profession”. Each day a reporter faces new challenges, new stories. In fact it's a dynamic job. Once a student becomes journalist he must love the job and explore every opportunity, he suggested.
Prof G P Shivram and Prof Waheeda Sultana were felicitated on the occasion for their service in the department.
