Mangalore, May 20: The two main accused in the gang-rape case of a 15-year-old girl from Kolpe near Vittla had taken shelter in Gujarat to evade arrest according to Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Dr Sharanappa.
Confirming the arrest of two of the accused - Basheer (29), son of Mohammed and Radukatte Basheer alias Kadambu Basheer alias Abdul Basheer (23), son of Ibrahim- on May 17 from their hideout in Okha in Jamnagar district of Gujarat, the SP told media persons that efforts are being made to nab another accused identified as Jabbar. Both the arrested are married men.
Replying to the queries of media persons at a press conference on Tuesday, Dr Sharanappa said that the district police was trying to arrest the accused since the beginning and there was no political pressure on police to cover up the issue.
“When the accused came to know that police launched a manhunt for them they fled to Gujarat. We too had sought help of Jamnagar and Dwaraka police to nab the accused. Based on our information they formed a team and arrested two of the accused at Okha,” he said adding that a team of district crime branch officials accompanied by sleuths from Vittla police station had been to Gujarat to fetch the accused.
He said, the police would produce both the accused before a court on Wednesday and seek their custody for further investigation.
According to the police, two accused befriended a 15-year-old girl of their neighbouring house and on April 18 they took her to Madikeri and raped her repeatedly. The following the girl was taken by one of the accused to his father-in-law's house, where there was no one, and raped her again.
The victim, who had allegedly been threatened by the accused not to reveal the truth, approached a week later and filed a complaint.
