Bengaluru, Sept 28: Amid high Drama, coalition partners in Karnataka-- Congress and Janata Dal (Secular)-- bagged the Mayor and Deputy Mayor posts in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) with Gangambike Mallikarjun and Romila Umashankar declared elected, respectively, amid walkout by opposition BJP members.
The election witnessed heated arguments and scenes of BJP and Congress members indulging in wordy duel over issues like disqualifying four members of Congress -- Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh and MLCs Raghu Achar, V S Ugrappa and C R Manohar as they were not residents of Bengaluru city.
However, Regional Commissioner Shivayogi Kalasad, who was the Returning Officer, overruled the objections and enraged over the decision BJP members staged a walk out.
While Gangambike of Jayanagar ward, who was elected as the 52nd Mayor, secured 130 votes against zero votes by BJP nominee Shobha Anjanappa, while Ramila, representing secured 129 votes against Pratibha Dhanaraj of BJP who also secured no votes.
Though BJP has the highest number of councilors at 100 in the 198-member house apart from MPs, MLAs and MLCs who have voting rights, Congress and JD(S) had shared the power after the 2016 elections to BBMP.
