Mangaluru, Aug 9: A bullet tanker mishap on Tuesday near Uppinangady on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru highway not only resulted in gas leak but also disrupted water supply to this coastal city.

The tanker ferrying liquefied petroleum gas plunged off the road and landed on Kumaradhara river after the driver applied sudden brake to avoid accident on a bridge near Udane under Uppinangady Police station limits.
Owing to possible health hazards, Mangaluru City Corporation stopped pumping of water from Thumbay Vented Dam from Tuesday. MCC stated there will be disruption in water supply to city areas on Wednesday.
According to police, LPG tanker belonging to Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited was plying to Bengaluru from Mangaluru. On reaching a bridge in Udane, driver applied brake to avoid an accident.
Due to sudden braking, the vehicle split into two and the LPG containing bullet trailer fell into river while the drivers cabin remained on the road.
The incident occurred around 4pm. Quick Response Team stationed in Gundya, few kilometres away from the spot arrived at Udane to plug the leakage.
Police said that since it fell into river, LPG evaporated with flowing river water. Meanwhile, police diverted vehicles on national highway from Uppinangady and Gundya soon after the incident avoiding traffic pile-up. A case has been registered in Uppinangady Police Station.
