Mangalore, Feb 21: With a total of 4, 46, 94,658 registered voters in Karnataka; one positive development in the electorate population in the state over the years is the reduction in gender gap.

The voter sex ratio in the state is slightly askew with 2.28 crore male voters compared to 2.18 female voters. This means that men constitute 51.01 percent and women constitute of 48.96 percent of Karnataka's total voters, which is slightly better than the national average.
However, the male-female ratio is the least when compared to the other south Indian states.
Districts such as Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Tumkur, Davangere and Chikmagalur have a better gender ratio than Bellary, Bidar, Koppa and Belgaum, according to the electoral rolls.
Slight improvement in transgender electorate
On the other hand, it is good news for the transgender community as Karnataka has the highest transgender electorate in the country. As of today, there are 8,453 registered transgender voters in Karnataka.
Uttar Pradesh comes second in transgender electorate with 6,630 voters and Andhra Pradesh stands third with 4,421 voters.
Activists working with Sangama, an organisation working for the welfare of transgenders, say that the change was a welcome thing. The struggle has paid off as the increase in registered voters reflects acceptance, said an activist, while pointing out that the transgender population in the state was more than 8,453.
