Mangalore, Mar 24: Customs officials at Mangalore International Airport thwarted an attempt to smuggle gold by seizing gold staple pins weighing 577g valued at Rs 17,19,460. These staple pins were concealed as silver colour coated staple pins in 18 carton boxes of vegetable dry fruits and found in the possession of an air passenger.
The accused Nesif Kowal, 28, resident of Bevinja post office, Thekkil Ferry, Kasargod district in Kerala arrived at MIA at Kenjar here at 7.15am by AIE flight IX814 from Dubai.
The search and seizure operation was conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, assistant commissioner of customs, MIA. Further investigation is under progress under the guidance of D Purushotham, commissioner of customs.
