Bengaluru, Jul 26: Former prime minister and JD?(S) supremo H?D?Deve Gowda would stage a hunger strike on Monday at the Janatar-Mantar in New Delhi to protest against the Union government for not giving him an opportunity to speak on farmers’ suicides in the Lok Sabha.
Gowda had sent a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan seeking an opportunity to speak on the plight of farmers in Karnataka but had not received a response. He said that he would continue his fast-cum-protest until his demand is met.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Saturday, Gowda said that he was very disappointed over Centre not honouring his request.
He said that he could not be a mute spectator for the series of farmers’ suicide and hence took the decision to stage a protest.
“It is unfortunate that more and more farmers are committing suicide and it is also a shame for the politicians. The Centre should announce a package for farmers, failing which a Vidarbha-like situation may arise,” he cautioned.
