Chamarajanagar, Mar 29: Gavithimmamma, the vice president of Doddalathuru gram panchayat in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajnagar district, who is arguably one of the oldest women in the country, passed away on Wednesday.
107-year-old Gavithimmamma leaves behind her three daughters, and a large number of grand children and great grand children.
Years ago she had lost three of her six children including a son, who once served as Director of the Co-operative and Agricultural and Rural Development bank. Her husband late Avalanayaka, who was the head of the village, had breathed his last a few decades ago.
She had contested and won the GP elections at the fag end of her life, grabbed the attention of the people and media. She was actively involved in development works for two-and-a-half years.
In 2015 gram panchayat polls, Gavithimmamma had secured 354 votes winning by a margin of 136 votes over her opponent, 45-year-old Chinnamma from the same village. “It was always my dream to serve her village. Villagers inspired me to contest, they have supported me. They elected me remembering the good work done by my husband,” she had said after the victory.
