Mangalore, Aug 15: With the support of several like-minded organisations, Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya has given an ultimatum to the state government to retract the Nethravati diversion project by the end of September, failing which they would launch a severe demonstration demanding the resignation of ministers hailing from Dakshina Kannada.
On the occasion of Independence Day, the organisations jointly held a Save Nethravati River' protest at Gandhi Park adjacent to Town Hall in the city on Friday opposing the Nethravati diversion (Yettinahole) project and the proposed river-linking projects of the state government.
Addressing the protestors, Dinesh Holla, convenor of Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya, said that the implementation of Nethravati diversion project in the Western Ghats was an abduction of life and freedom of the people of Dakshina Kannada. In spite of making promises, the elected representatives of the region have evinced no interest to stall the implementation of the disastrous projects. The main reason for this is the silence of the people in Dakshina Kannada. Having embellished the advantages of the Nethravati diversion project to the masses, the elected representatives of the district have cheated and duped the people during the time of elections, he said.
He warned of intense measures by the organisations if the state government failed to withdraw the implementation of the Nethravati diversion or river-linking projects within October 2. “We will demand immediate resignation of all the elected representatives of the region,” he said.
Activist Kateel Dinesh Pai said that the elected representatives from the region were “gambling” with the tax payers' money by sanctioning funds for an ambitious project, although the information cited in the project report itself was inaccurate and insufficient.
Being a forest and environment minister, district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai can stop the ambitious project from being implemented by refusing to grant the required 600 hectares of dense forest land in the Western Ghats. However, he does not take any action to halt the implementation of the project. The entire Western Ghats will perish if the project is implemented, he warned, demanding that the project be halted.
Close to 24 organisations including Karavali Yuva Sinchana, Vanya Charana Balaga, Koti Chennayya Yuva Vedike, City Rotaract, Chutuku Sahitya Parishad, Arehole Pratishthana, Team Mangalore Trust, Karavali Chitrakala Chavadi, Kannada Rakshana Vedike, Roshni Nilaya and others have pledged their support to the cause.
