Mangalore, Dec 6: Gopal Kharvy, who made it to the Guinness book of world records on December 1 by swimming across 3.07 kms in 2.43 hours, from Malpe beach to St Mary's island with hands and legs tied up, was felicitated by SCDCC Bank for his rare feat.
While the SCDCC Bank gave in cash Rs 50,000, Navodaya Charitable Trust gave Rs 25,000 in recognition of Mr Kharvy's daredevil feat.
SCDCC Bank President Rajendra Kumar said that Mr Kharvy has brought laurels to the entire state and he is truly a role model for all because he has achieved all this by fighting several difficulties.
Accepting the felicitation, Mr Kharvy said that it was only perseverance that led to realization of his dream.
“Since GPS cameras were not installed during my last attempt, I could not make it to the world records. This time, I spent over Rs 12 lakh to realize the dream of finding a place in the Guinness book of world records. While some generous donors have helped me meet the expense, I still have long way to go in repaying the loans taken for this purpose,” he said.
SCDCC Bank Vice-President Vinay Kumar Soorinje, Administrative Director Gopal Krishna Bhat, Directors Vadhiraj Shetty among others were present.
It may be recalled that Mr Kharvy, from time to time has staged some of the marvelous swimming stunts. In 2003 he swam 40 kms from Hangarakatte to St Mary's island in six hours. In 2004 he completed 80 kms from Gangolli to Malpe in 11 hours.
In 2009, he swam 15 kms in 2.20 hrs with hands and legs tied and entered the Limca Book.
In 2012, he tried to enter the Guinness Book of world record but lack of information about the procedures of the same kept him away from registering success.
