Mangaluru, Nov 22: The high court of Karnataka has summoned police officer-turned-politician Madan from Mangaluru in connection with the missing case of Vinayaka (19), a second-year student of aeronautical engineering at Karavali College following a habeas corpus filed by latter’s father Shivakumar.
Madan, who was a sub-inspector in Bajpe police station, had unsuccessfully contest the 2018 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election from Mangaluru South constituency as an Independent after tendering resignation to his post earlier this year.
Shivakumar, a native of Chikkamagaluru, who has been staying in Mangaluru for past 20 years, suspects Madan’s hand behind the mysterious disappearance of Vinayaka. “It’s been a month-and-a-half since my son went missing. Despite numerous appeals to the police, including the police commissioner, there has been no response from the department. As pressure is mounting, the police are now trying to show Madan as innocent and hold his female friend accountable,” Shivakumar told reporters in Mangaluru.
It is said that Madan had persuaded Vinayaka to be part of the extensive election campaign and the boy worked for Madan for about seven months. But Madan faced a humiliating defeat in the hustings and lost his deposit.
According to Vinayaka’s father, Madan had kept Vinayaka in his apartment in Bejai on the pretext of getting him a job, even after the electoral defeat. “I have not received a single phone call from my son after his disappearance. I had filed a complaint in Urwa police station on October 16,” he said.
The high court will begin its hearing into the habeas corpus petition from Thursday and has also issued summons to Urwa police station sub-inspector Ravish apart from Madan.
