New Delhi, Sept 17: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Thursday said that the coronavirus vaccine will be made available in the country by the start of next year. The remarks come at a time when India is recording more than 50 lakh cases and people are awaiting the vaccine with bated breath.

"Just like other countries, India is also making efforts. Three vaccines candidates are in different phases. Under Prime Minister's guidance, an expert group is looking at it and there is advanced planning in place. We are hopeful that by the start of next year a vaccine will be available in India," Harsh Vardhan said in Rajya Sabha.

Two indigenous vaccines by Zydus Cadila and Bharat Biotech have completed phase 1. Serum Institute of India (SII) has again commenced the trials after getting clearance from the Drug Controller General of India.

India is the manufacturing partner of the vaccine candidate named Covishield, developed jointly by the University of Oxford's Jenner Institute's and AstraZeneca. The Pune-based firm, SII, is looking after the trials at 17 trial sites across India.

Besides this, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited, a global pharmaceutical company headquartered out of India, have agreed to cooperate on clinical trials and distribution of Sputnik V vaccine in India.

Sputnik V, an adenovirus vector-based vaccine, was developed by the Gamaleya Scientific Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, along with the Russian Direct Investment Fund and registered on August 11.

"On regulatory approval in India, RDIF shall supply to Dr. Reddy's 100 million doses of the vaccine. The Sputnik V vaccine, which is based on well-studied human adenoviral vector platform with proven safety, is undergoing clinical trials for the coronavirus pandemic," said a statement from the fund.

Yediyurappa

Bengaluru, Oct 25: Hitting the poll campaign trail, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Saturday obliquely expressed his intentions to continue as his tenure even after state Assembly elections in 2023.

Notwithstanding the criticism by his own party men, Yediyurppa said that he would want to lead the party to victory in 2024 Lok Sabha polls along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that the Congress in the state gets zero seats in the next Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking at the campaign rally in Tumkuru, Yediyurappa dared the Congress leader, Siddaramaiah to accept his challenge to defeat him in 2023 Assembly polls. "Let Siddaramaiah know that I will not allow the Congress party to win single seat now or even in next Assembly elections and will ensure them to sit in the Opposition. And I will lead the party in next Lok Sabha election along with Prime Minister Modi," he said and quickly added that he was stating this to ensure to strengthen the hands of Modi by handing him even bigger victory in next Lok Sabha polls in 2024.

Yediyurappa came out in his defence for the first time nearly a week after his leadership was challenged by his own party leaders.

Last week his own party leader from Vijayapura district, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, had stated that Yediyurappa would be replaced soon as the party high command was fed-up with him.

Besides this, Yatnal had also maintained that the next BJP CM will be from the north-Karnataka region.

The 78-year-old veteran leader is known for his iron grip-like command over his community, Lingayats, who form about 15 per cent of voters in the state.

Due to his clout within the community, he is perhaps the first leader in the BJP across the country under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister, Amit Shah to be appointed as the Chief Minister by violating the party's very own rule of compulsory retirement at the age 75 years.

Ramanagara, Oct 17: In a dramatic turn of events, a case of gang rape turned out be case of honour killing with the arrest of victim's father and her elder brother along with her minor brother on Friday in Magadi.

This case made social media highlights as it coincided with the Hathras rape case. As a result, the Karantaka government even handed over the case Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police (SP), Ravi Channennavar, in the wake of Ramanagara SP S. Girsh testing Covid positive.

According to the police, the deceased identified as Hemalata (19) was a resident of Bettadahalli village in Magadi Taluka of Ramanagara district.

Her father, Krishnappa, filed a missing complaint on October 9, but on October 10 he filed a complaint of gang rape and murder. This had led to an outrage by upper caste and dominant Vokkaliga community on social media to lash out at the lower caste groups.

Acting swiftly, the state government directed neighbouring district Bengaluru SP, Channannevar to take over the case four days ago.

Soon after he took over the case, Magadi police started probing into various angles, including honour killing.

Speaking to media persons, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Magadi taluka, Omprakash said, "It was a challenging case as the family members had destroyed the evidences. She was killed using stone by her elder brother Chetan and her father Krishnappa, who had taken her to their farm to convince her not to shame their family by going out with her boyfriend, Puneet, who allegedly belonged to lower caste."

While the father was convincing the girl, her brother took a stone and hit her on the head and her younger brother (a minor) gave assistance in burning the body in their own farm.

The police have registered a case and are further investigation is on.

Riyadh, Oct 28: Saudi Arabia plans to cancel a foreign worker sponsorship system, known as kafala, and replace it with a new form of contract between employers and employees, the financial newspaper Maaal said on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.

Saudi Arabia, which this year is chairing the Group of 20 major economies (G20), seeks to boost the private sector - and make it more attractive to foreign talent - under an ambitious plan to diversify its oil-based economy.

The kafala system, which Maaal said has been in place for seven decades in Saudi, generally binds a migrant worker to one employer. Rights groups criticise the system and say it leaves workers vulnerable to exploitation.

"The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development intends next week to announce a new initiative that improves the contractual relationship between employers and expatriate workers," the Maaal report said.

The initiative will be implemented in the first half of 2021, it added, without giving further details.

Currently more than 10 million foreign workers live in Saudi Arabia under the kafala system that requires them to be sponsored by a Saudi employer and be issued an exit/re-entry visa whenever they want to leave the country.
