Mangalore, Jun 13: The state health department is mulling over serving idlis at Re 1 each in government hospitals in Karnataka akin to low-cost Amma canteens ' in Tamil Nadu.

According to reports, Health Minister U T Khader has begun talks with senior officials in the state health department to discuss this initiative. First the proposal will be initiated in selected government hospitals in the state, following which the pros and cons of the programme will be discussed. If the initiative is found to be working well, it will be extended to the government hospitals in each district.
As per the proposal, a separate canteen will be set up with government-sanctioned funds in the verandah of each government hospital. Once they are set up, steps will be initiated to provide the idlis in every canteen, following which arrangements will be made to supply them at Re 1 to the concerned institutions. The government has decided to provide the canteens with rice and other necessary items required to prepare the idlis.
The rice required to prepare the idlis will be provided through the food and civil supplies department to the institutions. Priority will be given to the cleanliness of the food supplies and the canteens during distribution of supplies.
The venture will be jointly undertaken by both health and the food departments. According to reports, the method of distribution of supplies is also being discussed by the senior officials with those from the food department.
The health department opines that this initiative in the verandahs of the institutions would greatly benefit the patients and their families visiting the government hospitals for treatment.
According to the health minister, providing meals to people at minimum rates was the purpose for floating the proposal.
