Mangalore, Aug 8: Moderate to heavy rains lashed most of the parts of coastal Karnataka on Thursday and early hours of Friday causing floods and damages in many places.
The incessant rains, which threw normal life out of gear in the city of Mangalore on Thursday, continued in the early hours of Friday too. Rainwater inundated low-lying areas in Jeppinamogaru, Adamkudru and Kannur.
Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers in DK, and Sauparnika, and Varahi rivers in Udupi are already in spate, and may cross the danger mark if rains continue.
Kokkada in Belthangady taluk of Dakshina Kannada district recorded maximum rainfall of 154.5mm in Karnataka in the 24-hours up to 8.30am on Thursday.
For the third consecutive day schools and colleges remained closed in the temple town Kukke Subrahmanya after the Kumaradhara Bridge, submerged on Thursday from 7.30am to 2.45pm.
The Dakshina Kannada district has been receiving good rains since Wednesday night and it continued even on Thursday. The five taluks of the district received 88.1mm for the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Thursday. For the same day last year, the district had received 42mm of rainfall.
While Belthangady taluk received the highest rainfall of 107mm, Sullia received the least at 64mm. Rest of the taluks the rainfall was as follows: Bantwal (109mm), Puttur (87.5mm) and Mangalore (71.9mm).
Though the normal average for the August month till was 258mm last year, this year it is almost double at 531mm.
The Uttara Kannada district received intermittent rainfall on Thursday. The River Varada in Sirsi taluk of Uttara Kannada district continues to be in spate. The vehicular movement on Bhasi-Mogalli road is stopped as it is flooded.
In Kumta, the water level in the Aghanashini river has risen threatening floods.Efforts are on to find the body of forest guard Mohan?Janoba Choudary, 55, who was washed away in the flood water while crossing a bridge across River Pandari near Chandewadi in Joida taluk on Wednesday. However, the body couldn't traced even on Thursday.
