Mangaluru, Apr 1: Zubair M Neranki, a soldier who recently became talk of the town in Tulu Nadu after playing a crucial role an operation against Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in Kashmir, was accorded a heroic welcome in his hometown in Dakshina Kannada district today.
The 29-year-od soldier, who was by the CRPF director-general with a ‘Commendation Disc and Certificate’ in February this year, is the son of Samoon Beary and Aminamma couple from Meluru hamlet in Neranki village off Bajathoor near Athoor in Kadaba taluk.
“This is definitely a surprise. This town is amazing in its patriotism,” said a humble Zubair when he was given a rousing reception by the villagers. He was garlanded and taken in a procession on an open vehicle. Hundreds of people, who had gathered to welcome him raised slogans of patriotism.
The 30-hour long encounter between militants and security forces had begun on February 12 after the ultras hiding inside a building tried to attack a CRPF camp at Karan Nagar in Srinagar. At least two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were killed. Zubair from the 49th Battalion CRPF, was part of the operation that successfully carried out by forces against the militants.
Zubair, who joined the CRPF in 2013, was initially posted in Hyderabad and later served in Latur in Maharashtra. He has been serving in Srinagar as a soldier for the past two and a half years. After his primary education in Haleneranky Government Higher Primary School, Zuber did his high school and PU education from Sri Ramakunjeshwara PU College near Uppinangady. Later, he did his BBM from St Philomena’s College in Puttur.
"In my childhood I wanted to become a police officer, but I was not selected in my two attempts. However, I cleared army selection in the first attempt itself. It is my fortune to serve the Indian army," says Zubair, who visited his hometown for the first time after February encounter.
