Kasaragod, Dec 29: K.R. Shylaja is on cloud nine as she celebrates 25 years as a teacher of Arabic at the Government Fisheries School at Puthen Kadappuram, near Thrissur.

œFinancial problems at home made me take the decision. But now I feel the choice was right, says Shylaja.
She is a former classmate of Gopalika Antharjanam, who is popular as the first ever non-Muslim teacher of Arabic.
œI never faced any difficulty at work. Teachers of Arabic in madrassas and other institutions extended support. There were many non-Muslims in the Arabic class I attended. All of them are teaching in different schools, she says.
She first joined the Vakamattam Malathi U.P. School, her alma mater. She was there on temporary posting.
œAfter losing the job, I remained at home for eight years. With the help of her teacher K. P. Moidunni, I wrote the PSC test, she recalls.
On clearing the test in the very first attempt, she got employed at a school in Deshamangalam and later at Mannalamkunnu Fisheries U.P. school and the Puthan Kadappuram school.
