Addressing media persons in the city, he said internal problems of Congress party have nothing to do with people and if the candidate is non-corrupt and good, nothing will stop him from winning.

Hegde said several Congress party workers have been supporting him because he has been instrumental in the implementation of many development works in the region. “I am in constant touch with the people and the party workers though I was defeated in the Lok Sabha election. As a result, I have been getting a positive response wherever I go,” he claimed.

He said there is no need to respond to personal criticisms and added that he would rather involve in issue-based discussions on development.

Hegde said active representation is important than the glorification of ministership. “There was a good opinion about me in the party till the moment I contested in Legislative Council?election as an independent candidate. The people, who praised me earlier, are criticising me now. This is dramatic,” he remarked.

Hegde said that he had spoken about the problems of common people in Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha. “Various development works were implemented in railways, aviation and road transport sectors during my tenure. I also played a key role in sanctioning of Rs 12 crore from the State government towards Brahmavar Sugar factory dues. I have also worked for the development of fishermen community,” he claimed.

He observed that there should be internal democracy in political parties and the workers should be taken into confidence.

Congress leader Harikrishna Bantwal, who is contesting the election, said he will not return to the party as long leader Oscar Fernandes is there.

Addressing mediapersons here on Thursday, he regretted that Congress does not have a culture of honouring those who work for it. “I don’t want to remain as a slave in the party,” Harikrishna said and parties should an environment where workers become masters.

Veteran leader B?Janardhan?Poojary has also been sidelined though he worked hard throughout his life for the party. “Injustice is being meted out to at least 80 per cent of the workers in Congress,” he charged.

“While Parliamentarians, Ministers and MLAs are backing Congress and BJP?candidates, the party workers would support me,” he said and added that party workers are not satisfied with the candidature of Pratapchandra Shetty and it will be known after the results.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Educational institutions in Mangaluru that rely on the popular Mangala Stadium for their annual sports events are bracing for an inconvenience as the city's key sporting venue is set to close its gates for a significant upgrade. The stadium is expected to be unavailable for approximately two months starting from January 15, 2026.

The closure is necessitated by a proposed overhaul of the stadium's facilities, with a special focus on upgrading the synthetic track. Pradeep Dsouza, Assistant Director of the District of Youth Empowerment and Sports (DYES), Dakshina Kannada, confirmed the development.

"Experts have visited the stadium, conducted a thorough inspection, and have given the go-ahead for a complete makeover," Dsouza stated. "Funds have been allocated for the project, and we are currently awaiting the final green signal from state officials to commence the work. We anticipate that the work will likely begin in the second week of January. Consequently, we have stopped renting out the stadium to colleges and other organizations in preparation for the upgrade."

The timing presents a logistical challenge for colleges, as many schools have already concluded their sports meets.

"Colleges will now be organizing their events and will need to find alternative locations to host their sports meets," Dsouza added. He suggested a few potential venues, including the Dakshina Kannada police ground, University College grounds, Panambur grounds, Swaraj Maidan in Moodbidri, and the Mangalore University sports grounds in Konaje.

However, many institutions note that finding a comparable venue will be difficult. While the DK police ground and University College grounds are closer to the city center, they do not possess the extensive facilities and infrastructure offered by Mangala Stadium.

Dr. P Dayananda Pai - P Satisha Govt First Grade College, Carstreet, is one such institution dependent on the stadium. Principal Jayakar Bhandary expressed hope for a swift completion of the work. "We expect the work to be completed at the earliest. If not, we will be forced to look for other venues to host the sports day for our students," Bhandary said, highlighting the pressing need for the city's main sporting facility.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
