Mangalore, Feb 3: Old traditions of making a mat using coconut frond, peeling arecanuts using a stand mounted sickle and grating coconuts on stand mounted graters took parishioners of Holy Cross Church, Cordel, Kulshekar, here on a trip down memory lane.

The occasion was Cordel Kela Yaad 2014 organized by Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Cordel unit, on Sunday. Items of daily use from the past, which was on display, added to the mood.

The Cordel Kela Yaad 2014 was organized with the idea of giving a push to tradition of old games and activities. The parishioners participated in this unique event with great gusto. Adding a touch of tradition to this event was a prayer song which Valerian D'Souza and his team rendered by playing the Konkani traditional instrument - Gumta. This musical start set the tone for the rest of the competitions and events that followed.

A Sadanand Shetty, chairman of Shree Devi Group of Institutions, inaugurated Cordel Kela Yaad 2014 by breaking the coconut to symbolize the customary way of getting auspicious events off to start as per Konkani traditions. Sadananda Shetty hailed the move by the Cordel parish in organizing the event as truly commendable. He said the parishioners are trying to keep the traditional games and activities alive in present day society.

Parish vicar Valerian Pinto, who presided over the events, said, "One of the cultural event in our Tulunadu is Aatida Onji Dina and Cordel Kela Yaad 2014 is similar to this cultural tradition of the land. It is an event to sustain the culture and nurture the kinds of games our elders used to play."

Assistant priests Fr Rohan and Fr Vishal; parish vice president, Praveen Patro, secretary, Michael D'Souza and others were present.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.

Mangaluru police have arrested a 27-year-old NRI on his return from Saudi Arabia in connection with an Instagram post allegedly containing derogatory and provocative remarks about the Hindu religion, officials said on Monday.

The accused, Abdul Khader Nehad, a resident of Ulaibettu in Mangaluru, was working in Saudi Arabia when the post was uploaded, police said.

A suo motu case was registered at the Bajpe police station on October 11 after an allegedly offensive post circulated from the Instagram account ‘team_sdpi_2025’. Police said the content was flagged for being provocative and derogatory in nature.

During the investigation, technical analysis traced the Instagram post to Nehad, who was residing abroad at the time, a senior police officer said. Based on these findings, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him.

On December 14, Nehad arrived from Saudi Arabia at Calicut International Airport in Kerala, where he was taken into custody on arrival. Police said further investigation is underway.
