Mangalore, Jun 17: With the problem of intensifying sea erosion plaguing the coastal areas of the district, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel recommended that the district administration should immediately hand over emergency compensation to victims of sea erosion and damage from rain in the district.
In a meeting with the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner, officials and local leaders here on Tuesday, Mr Kateel said that the pre-determined compensation should be immediately handed over to those who had lost their houses to sea erosion along the coast, as well as those who had suffered damage to life or property due to heavy rainfall in the district. He directed the concerned officials to conduct a rough survey of how many houses had been damaged due to sea erosion and hand over compensation to affected families.
An official informed that about 40 houses situated close to the seashore had been damaged due to sea erosion in Ullal, while 20 houses had been damaged in Panambur area.
In the meeting, Chandrashekhar Uchil, a resident of Ullal-Uchila, said that although his house had collapsed due to sea erosion, he had received only Rs 12,600 as compensation. Mr Kateel directed the district administration to immediately dispense the full compensation of Rs 70,000 to the affected family.
A victim is allowed Rs 15,000 if his house is partially damaged and Rs 70,000 if it is completely damaged.
Speaking at the meeting, deputy commissioner A B Ibrahim said that while the ADB-funded seawall was yet to be completed, sand bags had been placed in few critical areas along the coast to check sea erosion.
