Mangalore, Apr 17: Amidst tight security in naxal-affected areas in the district, there was a decent turnout of voters on polling day at polling stations in four assembly constituencies in Dakshina Kannada district limits.

Thursday saw voters coming out in good numbers in the rural parts of the district, especially in naxal-affected areas. Out of the 158 polling booths in naxal-affected areas in the western range of Karnataka State police, 62 polling booths are located in Dakshina Kannada district.

At a polling station in Kuthloor in Belthangady taluk, eight personnel of Kerala Armed Police were deputed for security in the naxal-affected vilage. The polling percentage at the two polling booths in the polling station till 1 p.m. was 52.98 percent and 55.95 percent.

At a polling station in Naravi in Belthangady taluk, which is known for naxal encounters, one civil police personnel and eight Kerala Armed Police personnel were deputed for security. A total of 27 polling booths in the area, which is reportedly the focus of Naxal activity in the district, were also being patrolled by a ten-member mobile team of Anti-Naxal Force.

Speaking to reporters at Naravi, Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police S D Sharanappa said that polling had been peaceful in the naxal-affected areas of the district, with 50.6% polling percentage in Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia assembly constituencies till 1 p.m. on polling day. So far, the voter turnout in naxal-affected areas has been good. The police force has been collecting reports and updates from each of 62 polling booths in naxal-affected areas at a regular interval of 15-20 minutes, he said.

The polling station in Naravi saw an average voter turnout of 53.65 percent till 2 p.m. Two polling booths at a polling station in Eedu village, also a naxal-affected area, saw a voter turnout of 59 percent and 66 percent till 2 p.m.

Tight security in naxal-affected areas

Renjith, a Kerala Armed Police personnel, told Coastaldigest.com, that there was no noticeable naxal activity in the area and the polling process was ongoing smoothly. The locals have been very co-operative, he said, adding that the main problem faced by the police personnel was the language barrier, as they did not understand the local language.

For the Lok Sabha elections this year, police personnel had been deputed from Karnataka State Armed Reserve Police, Kerala Armed Police, Maharashtra Special Reserve Armed Police force and Central Industrial Security Force in the district. Teams from Anti-Naxal Force were involved in rigorous combing operations in naxal-affected areas, while mobile teams were patrolling in the areas throughout the day.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.

Mangaluru, Dec 7: A 34-year-old fruit and vegetable trader in Mangaluru has reportedly lost ₹33.1 lakh after falling victim to an online investment scam run through a fake mobile app.

Police said the scam began in September, when the victim received a link on Facebook. Clicking it connected him to a WhatsApp number, where an unidentified person introduced a high-return investment scheme and instructed him to download an app.

To build trust, the fraudster asked him to invest ₹30,000 on September 24. The trader soon received ₹34,000 as “profit,” convincing him the scheme was genuine. Over the next two months, he transferred money in multiple instalments via Google Pay and IMPS to different scanner codes and bank accounts shared by the scammers. Between September 24 and December 3, he ended up sending a total of ₹33.1 lakh.

When he later requested a refund of his investment and promised returns, the scammers demanded additional payments, claiming he needed to pay a “service tax” first. Even after he paid a small amount, no money was returned, and the scammers continued pressuring him for more.

A case has been registered at the CEN Crime Police Station.
