Udupi, Mar 28: Even before people in Karnataka could forget the discomfiture over the MLAs Porn-gate, Malpe rave party, yet another controversial sex tape CD allegedly featuring Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat is being circulated.

The CD allegedly involving Mr Bhat and a woman in a compromising position went viral on Thursday after an unknown person forwarded it to some sections of media.

However, Mr Bhat claimed that the CD was “fabricated and morphed” and denied its contents. “It is not me, it's morphed, doctored and 'cut and paste work of my opponents,” he said. With only days left for the elections scheduled to be held on May 5, he denied playing any role in the video tape, and has claimed that it was a conspiracy by his rivals from other parties to tarnish his political image before the elections.

Speaking to news channels, he said that he was shocked and hurt and felt humiliated by the turn of events. Clarifying that he was not at fault, he however has declared that he did not want to cause further embarrassment to his party and would not contest in the upcoming elections.

The CD reportedly contains additional indecent visuals which cannot be telecast. Mr Bhat told news channels that he did not want to name anyone as the cause for having engineered the CD which shows him in bad light, and urged that a thorough investigation should be conducted about the source of the CD.

Shock

People in the coastalregion were in for a shock when private channels began telecasting the news about the CD at 10.30 am. The public became curious as most of the channels that aired the news said the videos in the CD were not worth telecasting as they were explicit sex scenes. One particular channel showed the clippings, but most places in Udupi do not have access to that channel.

Surrounded in controversy

This is not the first time that the MLA has been involved in controversy. Following the mysterious death of his wife Padmapriya in New Delhi five years ago, allegations grew whether or not Raghupathi Bhat had a role to play in her death, after she mysteriously disappeared from her home and was subsequently found dead in 2008.

Although preliminary investigations revealed that she had purportedly committed suicide, the rumour mill suggested that Bhat was somehow involved in the case. Four years after his wife was found dead, the MLA came out in the open last year and claimed that he was innocent and had no hand in her death.

There had been speculations previously, stating that Bhat's opponents would try to revive the controversy surrounding him being involved in his wife's death, ahead of elections. Hence, few members of the BJP had been apprehensive of instigators who might try to damage his reputation if he would be fielded from Udupi in the upcoming elections.

Mangaluru: The Bengaluru-Mangaluru air route has recently surpassed the Mumbai route to become the busiest for Mangaluru International Airport.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s city pairing data for March this year, 51,734 passengers travelled between Mangaluru and Bengaluru, while 50,340 passengers flew on the Mangaluru-Mumbai route.

In January and February, the Mumbai air route had the highest passenger flow with 60,306 and 52,732 passengers, respectively, compared to 53,509 and 47,530 for Bengaluru during the same months. However, the trend shifted in March, with the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route surpassing Mumbai.

An official from MIA explained, “The first reason for Bengaluru taking over Mumbai is that flights that almost fly full to Mumbai were reduced from March, after the ministry of civil aviation suggested easing air traffic congestion at Mumbai airport. The air carrier IndiGo, which used to operate four flights a day from MIA, reduced it to three. Air India Express, which operates two flights a day, has made no changes. As a result of this, Bengaluru has taken over Mumbai. A total seven flights operates per day to Bengaluru.”

The official added that despite the reduction in flights, the Mumbai route still experiences high demand. DGCA data for 2023 shows that the Mumbai and Bengaluru sectors have experienced growth of 11.9% and 19.3%, respectively.

The Mangaluru-Mumbai sector has seen a total of 5,52,767 passengers, followed by Bengaluru with 5,52,500 passengers in the same calendar year.

Bengaluru, May 2: Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister Deve Gowda, was issued fresh summons on Thursday by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) which is investigating the case of obscene videos involving the former JD(S) member, several news outlets reported.

The SIT also junked his appeal which sought seven days time to join the probe, as per these reports.

Prajwal and his father, H D Revanna, have sexual harassment and stalking cases filed against them over the matter. Gowda's son, H D Revanna, however, said that what took place '4-5 years ago' is now being turned into a legal case.

JD(S) in its core committee meeting suspended Prajwal from the party till the end of the probe. Prajwal, meanwhile, took to X to state he would join the probe in seven days time, asserting 'truth will prevail'.

Mangaluru, Apr 23: As an outbreak of avian flu has been reported in some districts of neighbouring Kerala, the border areas of Karnataka, including Mangaluru, have been put on high alert, officials of the Karnataka Animal Husbandry department said.

At present, the situation in Kerala is being monitored before any action can be taken, they said.

“Our Kerala counterparts have assured us that the avian flu has been contained within Alappuzha district. However, loading, booking and carrying poultry and poultry products on trains and at railway stations are still under consideration (surveillance), the officials said.

Not only railways but also road transport ferrying chicken loads from Kerala to Mangaluru are under surveillance. Mangaluru, being one of the largest consumers of chicken from Kerala, has halted chicken procurement from Kerala-based suppliers.

Sudhakar Shetty, a market functionary, stated, “The animal husbandry department of Kerala has advised containment of avian flu within a few districts in Kerala. We are closely monitoring the situation.” Despite this, the market has not experienced significant fluctuations in supply yet, as local stocks have been adequate to meet the demand for the next few days.

Demand for chicken could fall for a few days due to a series of temple festivals in coastal areas, where many consumers refrain from consuming meat-based meals until Saturday. Nevertheless, Sunday could witness a change, as consumers may desire hot chicken curry for their Sunday meals, according to the local people.

As officials in the animal husbandry department in Dakshina Kannada have raised awareness in the market about avian flu in the neighbouring state, the question arises whether prices will fall if demand decreases.

“We do not want to contribute to the hysteria surrounding avian flu until our local stock falls below the level of demand,” said Aston D’Souza, a farm owner.

Dakshina Kannada also serves as a good market for suppliers from Shivamogga, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru.

“In case supplies dwindle due to an unlikely prolonged shutdown of Kerala supplies, we can always purchase from those districts, albeit at a slightly higher cost than Kerala stock,” Shetty said.
