Mangalore, Aug 27: If you know to handle the situation, you can turn even your foes into fans within half an hour. Such a political miracle took place in front of the house of Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Minister in the city.
Demanding Rs 5 lakhs compensation for the kin of auto-rickshaw driver Rifai who was recently murdered at Netharakere, in Bantwal taluk, several auto-rickshaw drivers under the banner of Federation of Auto Rickshaw Drivers' Union (affiliated to CITU) staged a protest dharna in front of minister U T Khader's house in Kankanady, Mangalore on Tuesday.
The protestors urged that it was the responsibility of the local elected representatives to provide compensation for the family of an innocent man who was murdered.
The police have said that the murder of Rifai was an act of revenge for the murder of Naushad. Although Rifai was not involved in the murder case, his brother Touseef is an accused in the murder of Naushad.
Learning of the on-going dharna being held outside his house, Mr Khader in his absence, arranged for refreshments for the members of the union following the protest. He also reportedly requested the police not to disturb the peaceful protesters.
The protestors willingly accepted the food provided to them and raised a few pro-Khader slogans before vacating the place. They also submitted the memorandum to an assistant of the minister amidst hospitality.
In writing, Mr Khader assured the protestors of meeting their demands and also assured them of holding a further discussion in a couple of days when he was back in town.
