Udupi, Sep 17: The temple town became witness for the magnificent cultural extravaganza immersed in the gist of spiritualism on the occasion of'Krishna Leelothsava' also known as 'Vittla Pindi' in the midst of oceanic crowd in Udupi on Wednesday.
The Vittal Pindi procession began at the entrance of the Sri Krishna Mutt/Temple at 3 p.m. Vidyavallabha Tirtha Swami of Paryaya Kaniyur Math installed a clay idol ( ˜utsava murthy') of Lord Krishna on the top of the golden chariot (ratha). The idols of Lord Ananteshwara and Lord Chandramouleshwara were placed in the'Navaratna Ratha' ahead of the golden chariot.
Both these chariots were later pulled around the Car Street with traditional drum beaters and'huli vesha' dancers ahead of them. But'mosaru kudike' or breaking of earthen pots was the major highlight of the festival. Devotees watched this event with joy.
As many as 15 wooden'gopuras' were constructed around Car Street. As soon as the procession reached a gopura, a person would climb atop the gopura and hang pots containing milk and milk products.
A group of persons dressed in folk costumes would stand below the gopura with long sticks and jostle with one another to break the earthen pots (with sticks). This process was repeated at all the wooden gopuras. Whenever they broke the earthen pots, there was a loud applause from the devotees around.
Vidyavallabha Tirtha distributed'ladoos' and'chakkulis' at a stage erected near Ananteshwara Temple Cross Road. The vigorous dancing by huli vesha dancers was also eye-catching.
The procession culminated at the entrance of the Sri Krishna Mutt.
The clay idol of Lord Krishna was removed from the golden chariot and was immersed in the'Madhwa Sarovara' pond, bringing the curtains down on the festival.
