Mangalore, Sep 21: The Belthangady unit of Karnataka Dalitha Sangharsha Samithi, has filed a complaint against the publication of a classified advertisement in a local Kannada newspaper alleging that the advertisement was insulting and derogatory towards the Scheduled Caste.
On September 18, a'wanted' classified advertisement was published in a weekly broadsheet, calling for a female employee to work in a general store. The ad reads: œWanted: A girl wanted to work in a general store. Since there is accommodation facility, first preference will be for those who prefer to stay with the permission of parents (except Harijans). Contact: 9591173753
Taking offence to the classified ad, the Dalit organisation submitted a memorandum to the Belthangady police sub-inspector, urging that a case should be filed against the persons responsible for placing the derogatory classified ad in the weekly.
They complaints say that the ad not only addresses Dalits with a banned term, i.e.'Harijans', but also promotes untouchability by indirectly announcing that Dalits will not be recruited.
Alleging that the classified was derogatory and showed the entire community in a poor light, the organisation has also urged legal action against the accused under the SC and ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The memorandum submitted has named editor and printers of the newspaper besides the person who had given the classified for publishing, as the accused in the incident.
A case has been registered in this regard at Belthangady police station.
