Mangalore, Oct 22: Farmers, contract labourers and goods transporters under the banner of MCF Mangala Workers' Union staged a demonstration in front of the Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers (MCF) plant in Panambur on Tuesday urging the recommencement of the plant's urea manufacturing unit.
For close to five minutes, the flow of traffic was halted on the Mangalore-Panambur-Baikampady highway during the demonstration.
Addressing the demonstration, farmer representative Chandrappa from Davanagere said that after using Urea from several years for their crops, shortage of the fertiliser has gotten farmers worried since the halt of its production at MCF plant. The government should immediately arrange the resumption of the production of Urea at the plant and save farmers, failing which farmers will undertake a state-wide protest, he warned.
MCF Mangala Workers Union president K N Sooryanarayana said that the shortage of Urea was troubling the entire state since the halt of its production from the past 21 days. Packets worth Rs 250 of Urea from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are being sold in the black market at Rs 450 in Karnataka. In the coming days, agricultural activities will take a hit due to the halt in urea production, which could result in shortage of food supplies in the state, he said.
Union vice president Claudi D'Souza, Gangaiah Poojary, general secretary Govindaiah, treasurer P Rajan and others participated in the demonstration.
