Udupi, May 29: A mother who had left home years ago due to a mental illness, was reunited with her family and children in Kolkatta after 16 years once she was treated and cured of her condition.
Resident of Kolkatta, Baby had become mentally ill and had taken to wandering and living on the street in Shankarapura in Udupi taluk for years owing to her illness. The locals, taking pity on her, got her admitted to a treatment and rehabilitation centre in Shankarapura in February 2010. Owing to the severity of her illness, she had lost all of her memories of her family.
In the next two years, Baby underwent continuous therapy and rehabilitation programme to recover from her illness at the rehabilitation centre. Recovering her lost memories over time, she expressed her desire to visit her home and family.
Acting on this, the rehabilitation centre management wrote letters to her family on December 4, 2013 and January 16, 2015 informing her family about her recovery and whereabouts. However, due to an incomplete postal address, both the letters were sent back to the rehab centre.
Through continuous efforts, the proper address was obtained and a letter was sent on April 17, 2015 which reached her family members.
After a round of correspondence, her son Dayal came from Borampura in West Bengal to visit Baby at the rehab centre and being her back home. Arriving on May 28, 2015 at the rehab centre, Baby was reunited with her son after 16 long years. She has two sons and a daughter, among other family members.
Baby left with her son and other family members for her home in West Bengal.
