Udupi, Jul 30: MLC Kota Srinivas Poojary said that instances of communal clashes, rapes and terrorism had increased after Congress came to power in Karnataka two years ago.
Speaking to Coastaldigest.com, he said that the statistics and reply to the questions provided by Karnataka home minister K J George in the state legislative council itself was proof that such instances were the lowest during BJP rule in the state.
Year | Communal Riots | Sexual Violence | “Terrorism”
2012 7 36 0
2013 3 79 1
2014 16 79 1
2015 42 29 0
Despite the repeated assurances by the Congress-led state government to maintain peace and order in the state, the government has failed to do so, raising questions whether the government was keen on curbing terror activities or encouraging them, he criticised.
He also criticised the government for its failure in addressing various problems plaguing the people even as opposition parties continue to hold protests inside and outside the council sessions.
Speaking on the issue of rapid sea erosion near the shore in Udupi district, he said that the Rs 900 crore - ADB project to construct a permanent sea wall along the coast had been commissioned during the BJP rule, but only minimal work had been completed by the government after it came to power.
Although a sum of Rs 1.25 lakh crore is necessary for the irrigation project in the state, the state government has merely allotted a sum of Rs 12,500 crore for it. It has turned a blind eye towards the problems plaguing the poor. In view of nearly 250 farmers committing suicide in the state, the government must come forward to extend sympathy and confidence among the farming community he urged.
He further said that if the state government was prepared for decentralisation, it must hand over the administration of 29 matters from the zilla panchayat to the taluk panchayats in each district.
