Now, BBMP corporators take politics to resort

August 30, 2015

Bengaluru, Aug 30: The dubious tradition of resort politics raised its ugly head on Saturday with the newly elected corporators of the JD(S) and six Independents leaving Bengaluru to huddle in resorts in Kerala, giving room for speculation that horsetrading is imminent.

Desperation and confusion reigned in the BJP, which is clueless as to how to reach out to the six Independent corporators-elect who were packed off to a resort in Alappuzha, Kerala, in the morning. All six remained incommunicado. A Congress MLA, a known supporter of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, monitored their travel plan.

A woman Independent corporator-elect, who contested as rebel BJP candidate, is one among the six Independents. She was flown out of the City along with her husband.

JD(S)?MLA?Zameer Ahmed Khan sent at least 12 of the 14 corporators-elect and some legislators of his party to a resort in Kerala. They took the evening flight to Kochi. The reason given by Khan was that the rival parties were trying to poach them to muster the required numbers to win the mayoral election.

Notification on Monday

Neither the Congress nor the JD(S) was forthcoming on how long the elected representatives would be kept in the resorts. The government is expected to issue the notification for the mayor and deputy mayor election on Monday.

The JD(S), which emerged a poor third in the BBMP?election, has become all important for the BJP and the Congress as both the parties are keen to hold the reins of administration in the Palike.

The BJP claimed that it would choose only “Rajamarga” (right path) to run the Palike. But it began the day by sending Union Minister D?V?Sadananda Gowda to knock on the doors of JD(S) supremo H D?Deve Gowda’s bungalow in Padmanabhanagar. The minister, it is said, requested the JD(S) to either remain neutral or support the BJP to run the show in the Palike. The BJP failed to get any assurance from the JD(S). All Deve Gowda had to say was that he would reply to their request by Wednesday. His son H?D?Kumaraswamy, who is camping in a resort in Chikkamagaluru, said the developments should benefit the State. The party, which has enjoyed the prime minister’s post, would not resort to dubious means to be in power in Palike, he claimed.

The words of Siddaramaiah and Congress state chief G Parameshwara indicated that there are differences in the party over the Congress hobnobbing with the JD(S) and Independents to gain control over the Palike. When the media asked Siddaramaiah would it not be an unholy nexus between the Congress and the JD(S) in case a deal was struck, he retorted, “Sadananda Gowda met Deve Gowda. Is it not unholy? The BJP and KJP?joined together to oust the JD(S) from prime opposition position in the legislative assembly. Is this holy?”.

However, Parameshwara minced no words to express his reservations against any circus to run the administration. “The people’s verdict is clear on where we should sit. We will go accordingly,” he said. It is said that Parameshwara was not taken into confidence on the exercise undertaken by a section of Siddaramaiah loyalists and Minister Ramalinga Reddy to scuttle the BJP’s chances to have its supremacy in the Palike.

Mangaluru, June 16: Muslims in Mangaluru observed Eid al-Adha today by offering prayers in mosques and Eidgahs, exchanging greetings, and sacrificing animals, as the monsoon rain took a break in the region.

Congregational Eid prayers were held in dozens of mosques across the city. Thousands of Muslims gathered at the Masjids and Eidgahs early in the day. Hundreds of women and children also participated in prayers at some of the Masjids. Special 'dua' was offered for peace in the country and around the world, including Gaza.

Dressed in new clothes, Muslims visited their relatives' houses, where they were treated with special sweet dishes. Platters of a variety of delicious cuisines were prepared in Muslim households.

Children in festival attire added color to the celebrations. People wished each other Eid Mubarak and hugged as a large number of photographers captured the poignant scenes of the festival prayers and greetings.

In their Eid sermons, Khateebs exhorted the believers to follow the ideals of Prophet Ibraheem (pbuh), who had decided to sacrifice his son Prophet Ismaeel (pbuh) as ordained by Allah.

Eid al-Adha is an occasion of joy and peace, where people celebrate with their families, let go of past grudges, and make meaningful connections with one another. It commemorates Prophet Ibraheem’s willingness to sacrifice everything for God.

Mangaluru, Jun 8: Trading licenses granted to commercial establishments in the coastal city will be revoked if 60 percent of their signages are not in Kannada, warned the commissioner of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).

"According to the language policy of the government, all commercial complexes, industries, business houses, organizations, trusts, counseling centers, hospitals, laboratories, entertainment centers, and hotels are required to display 60% of Kannada language on their name boards as a mandatory requirement," stated MCC commissioner C.L. Bengaluru: The Congress on Sunday released its list of seven candidates for the biennial MLC elections on June 13. The elections were necessitated due to the retirement of 11 members on June 17.

As expected, the Congress has fielded Karnataka Science and Technology Minister N S Boseraju and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's son Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah.

The other candidates are Vasanth Kumar, K Govindraj, lvan D'Souza, Bilkis Bano and Jagdev Guttedar.

The party also announced Basanagouda Badarli for the forthcoming MLC byelection for a seat that fell vacant owing to the resignation of former chief minister Jagadish Shettar, who joined the Congress briefly after he rebelled against the BJP when he was denied a ticket in the 2023 assembly election.

"The election dates to fill that post have not been announced yet but our party has declared him as our candidate whenever the election takes place," a Congress leader said.

Shettar contested the assembly election in 2023 on a Congress ticket and after his defeat, his new home rewarded him with an MLC seat.

Earlier this year, he went back to his parent organisation and is contesting the Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket from Belgaum (Belagavi) constituency against Congress's Mrinal Hebbalkar, who is the son of Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar.
