Managluru, May 20: Taking a dig at the harbingers of jingoism, Dr Purushothama Bilimale, head of JNU’s Kannada Studies Chair, said that one cannot become a nationalist by hating another nation.
He was delivering a lecture on ‘Challenges of Democracy’ at a programme organized by the Muslim Lekhakara Sangha (MLS), a city-based Kannada literary association of Muslims, to honour its annual award winners at Town Hall in the city last evening.
Shedding light on the views of Rabindranath Tagore, the creator of the national anthem, who had stated that he would never allow patriotism to triumph over humanity, Dr Bilimale urged the people of the country to become standard-bearers of love, brotherhood and humanity.
He stated that Muslims, Dalits and woman were facing common challenges and threats in the country as all those three sections are looked at with suspicion.
Late U T Fareed Memorial ‘Muslim Sahitya Prashasti-2015’ was conferred on journalist B M Basheer for his anthology of Kannada poems, ‘Amma Hacchida Ole’.
Veteran Kannada writer and thinker Bolwar Mahammad Kunhi was given a warm felicitation by the MLS for his contribution towards Kannada literature.
Speaking on the occasion, U T Khader, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, called upon the writers to promote values like love, patience and humanity through literature.
Umar U H, president of MLS, presided over the award function. Shaukath Ali welcomed. B A Mohammed Ali compered the programme.
