Bengaluru, May 25: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has given a clean chit to former minister and Congress MLA H Y Meti in the controversial sex CD?case.

meti

The Bagalkot MLA had to resign as minister after a CD showing him in a compromising position with a woman, who had approached him for a favour, was made public in December, 2016.

The Home department had asked the CID to submit a report after conducting an inquiry into the incident and not investigating into it, late last year.

The CID submitted an eight-page report to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on May 17, saying BJP leader Murugesh Nirani played a vital role in the conspiracy. Along with Nirani, local BJP leaders - Ashok Lagaloti, Siddalinga Abalakatti, Maruti Mirajkar and Subhash, former bodyguard of Meti, were involved in conspiring against Meti, the report said.

CID sleuths, who were probing the video footage to ascertain if it was doctored or not, approached several media organisations, but they did not cooperate, the report said. There was no complaint received from anyone, including Vijayalakshmi, about the alleged sexual favours sought by the minister. Vijayalakshmi had given a statement that she and Meti shared the relationship of a father and daughter, the report says. Whatever they showed repeatedly on TV news channels could be doctored or edited video clips, forensic laboratory experts are reported to have said.

No original footage

Since the CID could not lay their hands on the original video, the analysis could not be done in a proper manner. The government had ordered the CID to probe only whether the footage was original or not and the sleuths had specifically done that. The footage was not original and the sleuths had enough evidence to conclude it was doctored and edited to victimise Meti, the report said.

The complaint that Vijayalakshmi had registered at the Navanagar police station in Bagalkot, saying she had received life threats from Subhash and others is in the final stage of investigation.

The conspiracy

CID sleuths have unearthed the conspiracy against Meti by a few BJP leaders and even hinted they could go to jail soon. Meti’s Bagalkot seat and Nirani’s Bilagi constituency lie adjacent to each other.

The BJP and Congress are pitted against each other in the two seats. In the last election, Nirani had lost to Congress’ G T Patil. The BJP wanted to make sure that they release Meti’s CD to defame and destroy his political career and thereby win the next election, it is said.

Lagaloti, a Congressman, was denied the party ticket to contest for Zilla Panchayat elections, so he switched loyalty to BJP and conspired against Meti.

Lagaloti, Abalakatti, Mirajkar and Subhash joined hands with Nirani to blackmail Meti and extort money from him. Nirani initially blackmailed Meti and took favours from him in government deals. He demanded Rs 2 crore per head, if he did not want the CD to be released to the media. When Meti refused to give the money, the five released the CD, an officer said.

The CID has learnt that the same group had targeted another MLA, by making a CD involving him. It had started blackmailing him and getting favours by way of government deals. CID officials who wanted to probe the case hit a dead-end as the MLA did not cooperate.

To be minister again?

Speaking to reporters in?Bagalkot, Meti said he stood vindicated, claiming the forensic examination of the video had proved it was fake. Meti, however, clarified neither he nor Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had tried to influence the CID?officials.

The former minister said he was sad that such charges were levelled against him. Meti said he was ready to work as minister again, if Siddaramaiah and the Congress high command so wished. His supporters went into celebration as soon as TV?channels reported that the minister had been given a clean chit.

With the Karnataka transport department extending the deadline for the installation of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) twice--- in November last year and February, it is no longer planning to extend the same. The department ordered for the installation of HSRP before May 31.

The transport department through a notification in August last year, had mandated the installation on all the vehicles that were registered in the state prior to April 1, 2019. According to transport officials, there are nearly two crore vehicles that are supposed to get HSRP for their vehicles.

“As of now, the state has registered only 34 lakh HSRP installations, despite extending the deadline twice. From nearly 18 lakh installations since February, the numbers have almost doubled. However, there are still a large number of vehicles that have to opt for HSRP,” said C Mallikarjuna, Additional Commissioner for Transport (Enforcement).

“We will wait till May 31 to check for the total number of vehicles that fall in line. We are expecting HSRP installations to touch 75 lakh, after which we will consider an extension as the numbers indicate that people are falling in line and if some more time is given everyone will get it done. However, if we do not reach that number before the deadline, we will request the government not to extend the deadline but urge for an enforcement,” he said.

He also stated that a fine of Rs 500 will be imposed for the first time and if vehicle owners do not fall in line, it will be Rs 1,000 later until they have installed HSRP. “We will wait till the Model Code of Conduct ends and take the government’s opinion. We are going to request the government for strict enforcement if the HSRP installations are not satisfactory,” he added.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party on Saturday alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is being pushed towards a “slow death” inside Tihar jail by denying him insulin and consultations with his doctor.

Kejriwal, who has Type-2 diabetes, has been asking for insulin and a video conferencing with his family doctor but his requests are being denied by the jail administration, party spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said in a press conference.

"I want to say with full responsibility that a conspiracy is underway for the slow death of Kejriwal," Bharadwaj claimed citing blood sugar readings of the Chief Minister in jail.

He also slammed the Tihar administration, BJP, Centre and Delhi LG for allegedly denying insulin to Kejriwal and said the Delhi Chief Minister had been suffering from diabetes for the last 20-22 years.

On Friday, the chief minister council Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi said Kejriwal has not been administered insulin to control his sugar levels since his arrest, terming it “shocking” and “alarming”.

The ED had on Thursday claimed before the court that Kejriwal was eating food high in sugar like mangoes and sweets every day, despite having Type-2 diabetes, to create grounds for medical bail.

Kejriwal, however, refuted the ED’s claims by asserting before a court that the food he consumed was in conformity with the diet chart prepared by his doctor.

“Out of 48 meals sent from home, only three times mangoes were there…,” Singhvi told the court.

Bharadwaj said Kejriwal was allowed by the court to use a machine in the jail to monitor his daily blood sugar levels.

"Overall, it was a conspiracy to finish Kejriwal so his multiple organ damage and when he comes out of jail after 2-4 months he goes for treatment of kidney, heart and other organs," said Bharadwaj, who holds the portfolio of health in Delhi government.

Bengaluru: Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued a series of animated shorts in Kannada advising people of appropriate measures to take during extreme temperatures to keep oneself safe.

“Karnataka has not seen such extreme temperatures and heat waves in the recent past. So, we wanted to ensure a wider reach for safety measures, therefore we decided to issue them in a reader-friendly format,” said an official from KSNDMC.

Meteorological Centre Bengaluru, Indian Meteorological Department, had issued a five-day heat wave warning, lasting till April orange alert, for parts of Karnataka.

“In places like Bagalkote, Vijayapura, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Tumkur, Mandya, Gadag, Davangere and Chitradurga, the temperature is likely to touch 40 degrees Celsius tomorrow,” said C P Patil, director of the centre.

On April 25, these places recorded a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius.

Orange alert would mean increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are exposed to sun for a prolonged period of time as well as those who do heavy manual work.

According to Patil, coastal Karnataka will also have very hot and humid weather conditions, making it very uncomfortable for people there.

“It’s best for children and old people to avoid exposure to heat in coastal areas too,” added Patil.

In places where heat wave is predicted, people are advised to avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12 noon and 3pm.

“When they go out, it is best to use protective goggles, an umbrella or a hat. Also aerated drinks must be avoided since they cause dehydration. Best to drink water as much as possible, even if you don’t feel thirsty,” said M Rajavel, head of LACD, Meteorological Centre, Bengaluru.

People are also advised not to leave the children or pets inside parked vehicles.

The maximum and minimum temperatures of Bengaluru are very likely to be around 37 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius respectively for the next 48 hours, said Patil.

Hassan recorded the highest jump from its normal minimum temperature. It recorded 22.6 degrees Celsius, about 2.8 degrees more than usual.

According to IMD, on April 29 light rain is also very likely in isolated places over Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya and Chitradurga districts.

On April 30, light rain is predicted again for Bidar, Kalaburgi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, Chikkamagaluru, Tumkur, Chikkaballapura, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban and Kodagu districts.

Incidentally, KSNDMC has also issued a series of animated advisory for lightning safety.

“We also update temperature every 15 minutes in our X handle in coordination with IMD,” added the KSNDMC official.
