Clashes erupt after armed right-wing goons attempt to demolish farmers' tents

New Delhi, Jan 29: Clashes were reported at the farmers’ protest site in Singhu, after another group of protesters broke past the police barricades and tried to uproot the tents where the farmers have been camped since November 28.

While media reports have described the second group as “locals” or a “group of people claiming to be locals”, it is likely that they are members of the Hindu Sena. On Thursday too, activists of the right-wing group had protested at the Singhu border site, giving an “ultimatum” to the farmers to evacuate the area.

According to reports, clashes and instances of stone-pelting were reported at 1:45 pm. Due to the clashes between the agitating farmers and the second group of people, the police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear gas shells to disperse the crowd.

The second group demanded that the farmers should vacate the Singhu border protest site as they had “insulted” the national flag during their tractor parade on Republic Day, according to news agency PTI. They were armed with sticks and asked the farmers to leave while raising slogans against them.

Questions are being raised about how the group of armed protesters was allowed near the farmers’ protest site, after NDTV journalist Arvind Gunasekar claimed that Delhi Jal Board’s water tankers and even media personnel were not allowed to enter the barricaded area.

Singhu is one of the main sites where the protesting farmers have camped, demanding that the three farm laws should be repealed.

The Hindu Sena had threatened to unleash violence on the peaceful Shaheen Bagh protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act in February last year, but called off its march.

Vokkaligara Sangha threatens Congress: ‘Shivakumar must be CM or face backlash’

Bengaluru: The Vokkaligara Sangha on Thursday issued a stern warning to the Congress, saying the party could face serious electoral repercussions if Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar is not appointed as Chief Minister.

The warning follows the public backing of Shivakumar’s chief ministerial ambition by top Vokkaliga pontiff Nirmalanandanatha Swami, who urged the Congress high command to honor his claim.

“The community supported Congress in the 2023 Assembly elections only because Shivakumar had a real chance to become CM. If he is cheated, we’ll teach the party a big lesson,” said newly elected Sangha president L. Srinivas. He added that Vokkaligas would organize protests under the guidance of community leaders.

General Secretary C.G. Gangadhar pointed out that Congress won more seats in the Vokkaliga-dominated Old Mysuru region due to Shivakumar’s influence, adding, “If Congress wants to retain power, Shivakumar should be made the CM.”

Outgoing president Kenchappa Gowda emphasized Shivakumar’s contribution to Congress’ victory. “Our community voted for Congress thinking he would become CM. Siddaramaiah has also served the party well, but Shivakumar should now be given a chance,” he said.

Former general-secretary Konappa Reddy appealed to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi to recognize Shivakumar’s loyalty and service, saying, “Congress is known to keep its promises. We hope it won’t break the promise made to him.”
