Mangaluru, Jan 2: A newly-wed couple, belonging to different communities, has sought police protection after they were allegedly threatened by the girl's family members in Ullal on the outskirts of the city.
Kiran Rai, a Hindu youth from Mangala Nagar near Ullal and Namitha Pais, a Christian girl from Kotekar were said to be in love with each other for some years.
The couple eloped after their families opposed the alliance and got married against their parents' wishes on December 27, 2014.
The wedding rituals were held at Arya Samaj temple in Mangaluru as per Hindu tradition in the presence of a few Hindu leaders, source said.
It is learnt that the love birds married a day after their parents lodged a missing complaint in the jurisdictional police station.
However the case took a new twist on Friday morning as the couple appeared in Ullal police station seeking protection from the their families and vigilantes in the society.
The duo reportedly submitted necessary documents to police to prove that they are legally mature and married couple.
