Mangalore, May 27: Mangalore International Airport (MIA) director has been asked to hold talks with private airlines to start more flights from the city to other parts of the country.
Minister for Haj and Infrastructure Development Roshan Baig during his meeting with the Airport officers in the city on Monday, suggested the MIA director Radhakrishna to increase the air traffic, as the flow of passengers from Mangalore to Bangalore and other cities has increased recently.
The minister also obtained information about various works that are taking place at the airport.
He said that the construction of exit road from the Airport which has been taken up at a cost of Rs 11 crore, has to be completed. The work on this road stretching for about 1.1 km is in progress and the government has already released the amount, he said.
Briefing about various works taken up at the airport, Mr Radhakrishna said that works worth Rs 10 crore are under progress in the Airport. Private airlines can be attracted if the VAT on jet fuel imposed in Karnataka is reduced, he said.
Karnataka Haj Committee Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Latheef brought the demand of the people to introduce direct Haj flight from Mangalore, to the notice of the minister.
Land has been identified for the construction of Haj Bhavan and steps have been taken to build a fence around the land.
Deputy Commissioner has already written to the Kerala government to take steps to ensure that Haj pilgrims from Kasaragod to undertake pilgrimage via Mangalore.
