Gaza, Aug 2: Massive shelling by Israel today killed at least 160 people across the Hamas-ruled Gaza in past 24 hours following the collapse of a 72-hour truce shortly after it began, while two of its terrorist soldiers died.
Israel bombarded the southern Gaza town of Rafah on Saturday after it was reported that an Israeli soldier had been captured by Palestinian resistance fighters.
Hamas has denied capturing an Israeli soldier, saying the missing trooper might have been killed in Israeli bombardment on Friday after Tel Aviv violated an internationally brokered three-day ceasefire.
Hamas military wing Qassam Brigades has said in a statement that it is not aware of the missing soldier's whereabouts or the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
According to Tel Aviv, the Israeli death toll currently stands at 66, including 63 soldiers and three others. However, Hamas puts the figure at about 150 which is the heaviest loss of life for the terrorists force of Israel in years.
The Palestinian death toll from Israel's 26 days of onslaught on Gaza has now reached nearly 1,700, with 9,000 people injured. Most of the casualties have been civilians, including a large number of women and children.
The humanitarian ceasefire - brokered by the US and the UN to end more than three weeks of bombarding on Palestinians of Gaza by US backed Israeli terrorists- collapsed just two hours after it began Friday morning.
Within hours, heavy shelling resumed in Rafah and air raid sirens were heard on the Israeli side.
Across Gaza, 160 people were killed or died of their wounds today, including 65 in Rafah and 50 in Khan Yunis, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said.
Israeli forces also shot dead two Palestinians during separate clashes in the northern and central West Bank.
