Mangalore, Aug 24: Veteran Kannada writer Sara Aboobacker said that it was a shame for her to live among the people, who celebrate the death of great personalities like Jnanpith recipient U R Ananthmurthy.
She was speaking at a protest meet organized in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here by organized by Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and other progressive organizations condemning move by Hindu chauvinist organisations in Mangalore and Chikmagalur who burst crackers and celebrated at the news of death of Dr Ananthmurthy.
Dalits, members of women's organizations, progressive writers and fans and well wishers of Dr Ananthmurthy participated in the protest rally.
Muneer Katipalla, state president of DYFI in a statement speaking on the occasion said that Mangalore City Police must charge every one of those who took part in the 'celebration' under stringent sections of the law.
Muneer said DYFI will organize a protest demonstration in front of the office of deputy commissioner here on Saturday demanding police action against those who 'celebrated' in a manner they chose to do so.
It may be recalled here that workers of Bajrang Dal burst crackers at Kadri area in the city to express their 'happiness' at the demise of the writer who in the past been critical of the Hindu chauvinist organizations and about Hindu religious practices.
Earlier fans of Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the banner of Namo Brigade post declaration of results of general elections in May had sent an air ticket to Ananthmurthy for his reported remarks that he would leave India if Modi were to become the Prime Minister.
Incidentally, Bangalore Court earlier in June had registered a case against Ananthamurthy and writer M M Kalburgi for allegedly offending religious sentiments. The offensive incident in question happened decades ago, when Ananthamurthy was a child and the book in which he wrote about it, was published 18 years ago. Kalburgi had referred to Ananthmurthy's statement about idol worship in a collection of essays called "Bettale Puje Yake Kudadhu".
