Bangalore, Aug 13: Ivan D'Souza, who has been elected for the first time as an MLC on Tuesday, met the Regional Passport Officer, Bangalore, seeking his intervention to expedite issue of passports at the Mangalore Passport Office.
According to a press release, Mr D'Souza said he led a delegation of people to the Regional Passport Office, Bangalore, and met Karthikeyan, the Passport Officer. He told the officer that passport applicants in Mangalore were facing difficulties in getting passports.
Only about 350 passports a day were being granted now in Mangalore, the MLC said. The officer informed Mr. D'Souza that the delay was due to shortage of printing paper and over 28,000 applications were at printing stage. The problem would be addressed within a fortnight, Mr. Karthikeyan said. The officer also informed Mr. D'Souza that he would visit the Mangalore office during the last week of this month to take stock of the situation.
The officer also promised Mr. D'Souza that the Ministry would strive to provide walk-in facility at the Mangalore facility and to provide other basic facilities to the applicants at the office, the release said.
Meanwhile, Mr. D'Souza urged the Ministry to convert the Mangalore Passport office into a full-fledged regional office. Karnataka, though issues the highest number of passports, has only one full-fledged office, he said.
