Bengaluru, Apr 14: Vijayanagara BJP MLA Anand Singh has sent in his resignation letter to Assembly Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa.
Singh, a former minister, was arrested last week for his alleged role in the illegal export of iron ore from Belekeri port. The CBI had also earlier arrested Singh and other BJP MLAs in connection with the illegal mining export case.
A two-time MLA, Singh has also written to party president Prahlad Joshi thanking him for the opportunity to serve as an MLA and a minister. He has also thanked former chief ministers B S Yeddyurappa, D V Sadananda Gowda and Jagadish Shettar for making him a minister.
“I have decided to resign in the interest of the constituency, which would suffer without a representative as I cannot respond to the people’s problems from jail,” he said in a letter to Joshi, explaining his decision to quit.
Sources in the Prison Department said that Mr. Singh, who was arrested by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Lokayukta that is investigating illegal mining cases, has asked the DIG Prisons to hand over the resignation letter to Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa.
However, Additional Director-General of Police (Prisons) Kamal Pant refused to comment on the issue.
An official in the Legislative Assembly Secretariat said the Speaker’s office had not received the resignation letter till Monday evening.
Sources close to Mr. Singh, who was Tourism Minister in the previous BJP government, said he has tendered resignation citing inability to focus on his Vijayanagara constituency in Ballari district. Mr. Singh is the owner of S.B. Minerals and has been charged with illegally supplying 17,086 tonnes of iron ore to Muneer Enterprises.
In October 2013, the Anti-Corruption Bureau of the CBI, Bengaluru, had accused Mr. Singh of supplying 1.45 lakh tonnes of illegally mined iron ore to two trading companies.
