Jamiat-e-Ulama leader from Hyderabad picked up at Delhi airport by Gujarat police

March 26, 2014

Hyderabad, Mar 26: Maulana Mohammed Abdul Qavi, Hyderabad-based Islamic scholar was picked up at the New Delhi airport reportedly by Gujarat's anti-terrorist squad (ATS) en route from the capital city to Deoband in Uttar Pradesh, where he was to attend a conference, his family said on Monday.

According to Maulana Qavi's elder brother, Mufti Abdul Moghni Mazhari, who runs an Islamic seminary in Saidabad, the 53-year-old Maulana Qavi, also the vice president of Jamiat-e-Ulama Hyderabad (JUH) took a 7.30 pm flight to Delhi on Sunday evening and landed around 9.40 pm when ATS policemen in mufti picked him up, reportedly without a warrant.

Maulana Qavi was to attend a meeting in Deoband pertaining to pedagogical issues in seminaries. An associate who had arrived at the airport to receive him was "thoroughly" questioned before being let off.

The picking up of Maulana Qavi, who his students and peers described as a "quiet and moderate scholar", is believed to be in connection with a POTA case chargesheet filed by the detection crime branch in 2004 in which he is named as an accused.

Sources said that the city police had been tracking Maulana Qavi's movements and sharing information with the Gujarat police. The chargesheet included other names from Hyderabad such as Maulana Naseeruddin, who was acquitted by a court in 2010.

According to Khaleeq Sabir, state general secretary of JUH, Maulana Qavi who is claimed as absconding by Gujarat police, has been very much in the city. "In fact, he was in Baroda and Surat in Gujarat around 10 months ago. Newspaper clippings of his programmes in the city are available. This is a violation of human rights. He was produced in a special court in Mirzapur in Ahmedabad on Monday evening and has now been taken in a 14-day judicial remand. We later found out that he is now taken into custody by crime branch", Sabir said. A panel of four lawyers has been constituted to look into the case, he added.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi demanded that Maulana Qavi be released immediately. He criticised union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde for allowing the arrest to take place in Delhi.

"This is a return to the 2002 memories of Hyderabadis when many Muslims were picked up on trumped up charges and lodged in Sabarmati Jail. The DK Basu guidelines were not followed. Delhi police is under the Centre's control. Why was this allowed to happen in the first place," he said.

Modi must answer why my brother arrested just before polls: Mufti Abdul Mughni

Hyderabad: Mufti Abdul Mughni Mazahiri city president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind is in deep shock, his younger brother and renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Mohammed Abdul Qavi has been arrested on Sunday night by a joint operation of Gujarat ATS and Delhi police special cell in a decade old case of conspiracy to assassinate Narendra Modi and other Sangh leaders.

Sprawling complex of Madrasa Asharful Uloom located at Saidabad wears a guarded look, with students looking wary of any outsider and teachers with clear anxiety over their face herding children back to classes immediately after Zohar prayer.

53 year old Maulana Abdul Qavi is the founder and rector of Madrasa Ashraful Uloom who have a big name in the religious circles of Hyderabad. As a renowned theologian he wrote many books on Islamic fiqh. Apart from Jamail Ulema he is also considered close to many bigwigs of Tabligee Jamat. His arrest by Gujarat ATS has shocked everyone who knew him even distantly; his elder brother is shaken by the events to say the least.

Mufti Abdul Mughni sitting at his cabin with crossed legs on a sofa had a hard time dealing with flew of journalists. Sunday he was in Vijaywada attending a conference and has to rush back to Hyderabad after getting the news of his brother 's arrest.

Sitting by him press secretary of JUH Ahmed Saber gives the detail of events unfolded on Sunday evening. “Maulana was going to Deoband to attend a seminaries meeting, he boarded flight from Hyderabad to Delhi at 7:30 p.m. he reached Delhi at 9:40 p.m. at the airport plain clothes police officers arrested Maulana and confiscated all of his belongings. Two JUH members who came to receive Maulana at airport was also detained but soon released after getting their address proof.” He said from then on they have no official information about where about of Maulana, “But we believe he is been taken to Gujarat,” Mr. Saber affirms.

Mufti Abdul Mughni said 20 hours has been passed but till now no security agency has informed us officialy. Is this the way law treat a scholar in a civil society? ' he questions.

Later in the night Maulana Qavi was presented before a POTA court where judge remanded him in 14 days police custody.

Maulana Abdul Qavi since long has been in the radar of Gujarat police. He was charge sheeted in DCB I-CR No. 6 of 2003 popularly known as ISI greater conspiracy case ' in which dozens of Muslim youth were arrested under POTA from Hyderabad by Gujarat police on the allegation of conspiring to assassinate Chief Minister now BJP P.M. candidate Narendra Modi, than Home Minister L.K. Advani and VHP leader Praveen Togadia.

The case was basically a proxy of Gujarat police to run their own parallel investigation in Haren Pandya murder case which CBI was handling.

Almost everyone who was accused and arrested in this case including radical cleric Maulana Naseeruddin has been acquitted by the court.

Maulana Qavi till now was untouched by security agencies in this case, however his nephew Mufti Asharf Ali rector of Madrasa Sabeebul Falah was arrested by Gujarat police in 2007 but he too was soon acquitted in the conspiracy case by the session court.

Ahmedabad Crime Branch while presenting Maulana Qavi in POTA court alleged that he was served notices multiple times and a warrant was issued for his arrest long time back.

Till now Maulana Qavi never ever received any official information regarding this particular case, claims his elder brother. “Maulana Qavi use to travel extensively across India delivering speeches and attending conferences.” And the most interesting part he discloses, “Even last year he went to Gujarat to attend a conference in Surat. They didn 't touch him then, so question is why now?” Mufti Abdul Mughni wonders.

He also dismissed the allegations from certain sections of media that Maulana Qavi was absconding, “It 's an utter lie, and he has deliver Friday sermons at neighboring Akbari mosque where thousands attend to listen to him. He has always been here; there is no question of running away.”

According to charge sheet of DCB-6 case, which TCN has copy of, Maulana Abdul Qavi has been made accused no.42 in this case with a specific charge of providing shelter to alleged Narendra Modi assassination conspirators in Hyderabad and also allegedly helped them to escape to Bangladesh.

JUH termed those allegations wild ' and baseless ' “Those are just allegations without any evidence how can we comment on such ridiculous accusations”, they said.

Interestingly DCB-6 case has been handled by none other than I.P.S officer G.L. Singhal who was Asst. Commissioner of Police Ahmadabad at that period. Known to be Narendra Modi 's man in snoop gate of young woman, Mr. Singhal in his capacity as Gujarat ATS chief on the orders of former Gujarat HM Amit Shah snoop upon young woman who was known to Mr. Modi.

More fascination comes with the introduction of investigating officer of this case, Narendra K Amin.

N.K. Amin Gujarat police officer who investigated and prepared charge sheet of DCB-6 ISI grater conspiracy case ' is currently in jail for his role in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case and also chargesheeted in Ishrat Jahan and three others fake encounter case. Ironically both those cases also had a same set of theme of Pakistani plan to assassinate Narendra Modi.

When asked about timing of Maulana Qavi 's arrest just before crucial national elections in a decade old conspiracy case to assassinate BJP chief minister now P.M. candidate Narendra Modi, his elder brother with a confused look said “We cannot confirm anything, my brother has never indulge in any kind of politics, so no one should use him for that sake.” Then after some cautious wording Mufti Mughni said “May be, he (Narendra Modi) should answer on the timing of my brothers arrest. They are the appropriate one to answer on the logic behind arrest just before elections in a 10 year old case.”

Jamait Ulema informed TCN that their chief Maulana Mehmood Madani has personally spoken to senior officials of Gujarat government and is expected to reach Ahmadabad soon. Services of senior Supreme Court advocate Mehmood Parcha is assigned by JUH to Maulana Qavi.

Apart from this JUH has also written letters to Andhra Pradesh Governor, chief justice and also spoken to commissioner of police. Mufti Abdul Mughni Mazhari also informed that JUH are planning mass demonstrations at district collector offices across Andhra Pradesh to protest against Maulana Qavi 's arrest.

Bengaluru: The Congress and BJP will lock horns on the electoral battleground again in less than a fortnight in Karnataka, as the stage is set for the second phase of elections in the 14 remaining Lok Sabha seats on Tuesday.

It is going to be a straight fight between the ruling Congress and BJP in Parliamentary segments in the northern districts. The JD(S) is not contesting in these seats and is supporting its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partner -- the BJP.

The state has a total of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies. The first phase of polling in 14 seats in most of the southern and coastal districts was held on April 26.

A total of 227 candidates -- 206 men and 21 women -- are in the fray for the second phase.

More than 2.59 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in 28,269 polling stations where voting will take place between 7 am to 6 pm.

The segments where elections will be held on Tuesday are: Chikkodi, Belgaum, Bagalkot, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal, Bellary, Haveri, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Davangere and Shimoga.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, BJP had swept all these 14 seats, defeating Congress and JD(S), which were in alliance and ruling the state then.

Having scored a thumping victory in the Assembly elections last year, the Congress now appears determined to put up a strong show.

Karnataka is the most important state for the BJP in south India as it's only here that it has held power in the past.

Speaking to PTI, Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Meena said adequate security arrangements have been made for Tuesday's polling.

"Around 1.45 lakh polling officials have been deployed across the 14 constituencies. In addition, 35,000 civil police personnel, 65 companies of Central Paramilitary forces and armed police of other states will be deployed for the polling day," he said.

Besides this, 4,000 micro-observers will also be on duty and 17,000 polling stations will be covered by webcasting, he added.

Davangere has the maximum number of 30 candidates, followed by 23 in Shimoga and Raichur has the least number - eight.

Former Chief Ministers Basavaraj Bommai (Haveri) and Jagadish Shettar (Balgaum), Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi (Dharwad) and Bhagwanth Khuba (Bidar) -- all from BJP; Congress' Geetha Shivrajkumar (Shimoga) -- wife of actor Shivrajkumar and daughter of former CM S Bangarappa and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge's son-in-law Radhakrishna Doddamani (Gulbarga), are among the prominent names in the fray.

Also in the contest are MP and veteran BJP leader B S Yediyurappa's son B Y Raghavendra, suspended party leader and former Deputy CM K S Eshwarappa -- both from Shimoga, former Speaker Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri and ex-Minister B Sreeramulu of BJP from Uttara Kannada and Bellary respectively and retired IAS officer G Kumar Naik of Congress from Raichur.

Stakes are high for several Ministers in this phase with their children in fray.

Sons of Ministers Laxmi Hebbalkar and Eshwar Khandre - Mrinal Ravindra Hebbalkar and Sagar Khandre - are contesting from Belgaum and Bidar respectively, while daughters of Ministers Satish Jarkiholi and Shivanand Patil -Priyanka Jarkiholi and Samyukta Patil- are in contention in Chikkodi and Bagalkot respectively.

Prabha Mallikarjun, wife of Minister S S Mallikarjun and daughter-in-law of veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, is in the fray from Davangere.

The Congress' performance in the elections, especially in the second phase which covers almost all Lingayat-dominated districts, is crucial, as the party did not win one of them in 2019, and to also check whether the grand old party has managed to retain the support of a section of Lingayats -- considered as the BJP's core vote-base -- which seemed to have somewhat shifted towards it in the 2023 Assembly polls.

The Lok Sabha election is being seen as a big test of sorts for Congress state unit chief D K Shivakumar, who has made no secret of his ambition to become chief minister, amid speculations of change in guard mid-way of the Assembly term. The stakes are also high for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, as victory in this election is seen as key to strengthening his hands, analysts say.

It is also seen as a kind of a "litmus test" for state BJP president B Y Vijayendra, who has the onerous task of helping the party retain its supremacy in the Lok Sabha polls, by regaining its traditional Lingayat vote-base.

Ensuring a BJP sweep is paramount for the son of veteran leader B S Yediyurappa, to consolidate his position and silence critics who have questioned his selection to the post, overlooking seniors and seasoned hands.

The ruling Congress is mostly banking on the implementation of its populist five guarantee schemes while the BJP seems to be leveraging the "Modi factor" to the hilt.

Mangaluru, May 20: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a Class 3 girl student tragically lost her life due to the collapse of the compound wall of Harekala Hajabba Government Senior Primary School in Newpadpu, situated on the outskirts of the city, during the evening hours of Monday, May 20, following heavy rains.

The young victim, identified as Shazia Banu (7), was the cherished daughter of Siddique and Jamila, residing in Newpadpu. She met her untimely demise in the unfortunate accident.

Over the past two days, students from the National Service Scheme (NSS) at Mudipu Undergraduate College had been engaged in activities at the Harekala Hajabba School.

Shazia, who lived in close proximity to the school, eagerly participated in these endeavours. Tragically, while playing near the school compound gate before returning home in the evening, the wall collapsed suddenly, fatally injuring her. Despite the prompt efforts of local residents to rescue her, Shazia succumbed to her injuries.

The incessant rainfall in Ullal taluk since the morning had significantly weakened the structural integrity of the compound wall, ultimately resulting in its collapse. Officials from the Harekala gram panchayat and the Konaje police promptly responded to the scene and have initiated an investigation into the matter.
