Bengaluru, Mar 15: The JD(S) on Wednesday decided to initiate legal action against the seven rebel MLAs who voted in favour of the Congress candidate during the 2016 Rajya Sabha election.

In a statement, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda said that the party will move the High Court against the MLAs for defying its whip in the election. The party's candidate B M Farookh lost the election due to the cross-voting.
"The whip, given by the JD(S), has been violated by the seven MLAs. A complaint was filed with Legislative Assembly Speaker K B Koliwad against the MLAs. Till date, no action has been taken against the legislators. In this regard, we are forced to take legal course of action," the statement reads.
The party's move comes ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha election scheduled to be held on March 23. The MLAs, who have sided with the Congress, are yet again expected to cast their votes in favour of the third candidate.
While the Congress has the numbers for comfortably winning the first two seats, it is banking on the rebel MLAs for winning the third seat.
The JD(S) now hopes to curtail the Congress' prospects through this legal recourse.
The party, though lacking in numbers, has again fielded Farook in the election.
