JD(S) sees prize catch in Sharief

Bangalore, Mar 19: Long-time Congressman C?K?Jaffer Sharief may well be the prize catch for the JD(S) this election season.

Sources in the party said that Sharief may opt to contest from Mysore on a JD(S) ticket. However, his family members want him to contest from Bangalore Central, it is said. If this happens, the minorities would drift to a certain extent from the Congress to the JD(S) is the calculation by JD(S) leaders.

Sharief said his association with the Congress was a closed chapter. He said he would contest the polls, but was not ready to disclose the choice of his constituency. He said his followers from Chikkaballapur met him on Monday and requested him to contest from there.

“But I am not for that constituency. There are requests from Bidar also. The people of Mysore still remember me, because it was during my tenure as the railway minister that the metre gauge railway track to Bangalore was converted into broad gauge,” he said.

JD(S) leader H?D?Kumaraswamy said, “We want Sharief to contest from Mysore. The Mysore unit of the JD(S) is unanimously supporting Sharief. He has told us that he will announce his decision on March 20 from Makkah.”

A majority of the Muslim leaders in the Congress do not want Sharief to quit the party. They fear that their votebank will shrink in case the minorities drift towards the JD(S). However, no one wants to be quoted on this.

Union Minister of Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan, the bete noire of Sharief, said, “He (Sharief) is a tall leader in the Congress. But it is the decision of the party high command that importance should be given to youth in these elections.

Not only Sharief, a number of leaders across the country have not got tickets due to the decision of the party. This is a policy decision taken in the interest of the party,” he stated. Asked whether the rebellion by Sharief would harm the party 's poll prospects, he said he does not want to speculate.

Dhananjay in Udupi

Another migrant to the JD(S) is V Dhananjay Kumar, who is technically with the KJP?now. He was with the BJP from 1980 till Yeddyurappa floated the KJP. The BJP is not ready to reconsider the decision not to reinduct him.

“My return to the party has been blocked by H N?Ananth Kumar. It is wrong to assume that I was not taken back into the party because I made some comments against L?K?Advani. If that was the case, how did G?S?Basavaraj get back into the party after making comments against Advani?” he said.

He said that he would contest as the JD(S) candidate from the Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency. His one-time colleague Shobha Karandlaje has already begun her campaign there as the BJP nominee.

Mangaluru: In a significant step to curb online hate and intimidation, Mangaluru City Police have registered a suo motu case against multiple Instagram accounts accused of circulating alleged provocative and threatening content.

While monitoring social media activity on Tuesday, Kankanady Town PSI Anitha Nikkam identified the Instagram handle ‘team_targetttt_900’ for posting a hate message alongside images of lethal weapons. Another account, ‘team_nagara_900’, allegedly shared a threatening post targeting activist Bharath Kumdelu, tagging additional pages such as KARAVALI-OFFICIAL.

Several other accounts — including ‘immu_bhai.fan’, ‘target_boy_900’, ‘kings_of_manglore’, ‘team_target_boys.900’, ‘arshad_mangalore’, ‘target_ka19_ullal’, ‘team_target__’, ‘troll_tigersz_900’, ‘tr_group_900’, and ‘team_target_900’ — are also under scrutiny for spreading similar inflammatory material, police said.

Authorities have urged citizens, especially young social media users, to report suspicious pages and avoid engaging with groups that glorify violence or threaten individuals. Online hate can quickly escalate into real-world harm, and police stress that sharing or promoting such content can attract legal consequences.

Mangaluru: In a decisive move to tackle the city’s deteriorating sanitation infrastructure, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has announced a massive ₹1,200 crore action plan to overhaul its underground drainage (UGD) network.

The initiative, spearheaded by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV, aims to bridge "missing links" in the current system that have left residents grappling with overflowing sewage and environmental hazards.

The Breaking Point

The announcement follows a high-intensity phone-in session on Thursday, where the DC was flooded with grievances from frustrated citizens. Residents, including Savithri from Yekkur, described a harrowing reality: raw sewage from apartments leaking into stormwater drains, creating a "permanent stink" and turning residential zones into mosquito breeding grounds.

"We are facing immense difficulties due to the stench and the health risks. Local officials have remained silent until now," one resident reported during the session.

The Strategy: A Six-Year Vision

DC Darshan HV confirmed that the proposed plan is not a temporary patch but a comprehensive six-year roadmap designed to accommodate Mangaluru’s projected population growth. Key highlights of the plan include:

•    Infrastructure Expansion: Laying additional pipelines to connect older neighborhoods to the main grid.

•    STP Crackdown: Stricter enforcement of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) regulations. While new apartments are required to have functional STPs, many older buildings lack them entirely, and several newer units are reportedly non-functional.

•    Budgetary Push: The plan has already been discussed with the district in-charge minister and the Secretary of the Urban Development Department. It is slated for formal presentation in the upcoming state budget.
