Mangalore, Sep 27: Alleging that the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemical Limited (MRPL) Phase III plant located in Mangalore taluk was causing problems for the residents of Jokatte and surrounding villages, several protestors staged a protest dharna in front of the plant on Thursday.

The protestors complained of the thick dust and smoke generated by the plant, especially during night-time, which made breathing difficult for the residents. Some demanded their rehabilitation to another village.
Few protestors also complained of the ground water becoming increasingly polluted, along with foul smell emanating, due to the coke units in the plant.
One of the protestors, a daily-wage labourer, said that two of his family members had been suffering from breathing problems since the functioning of the Phase III plant began, and had to be admitted to the hospital.
Assistant Commissioner of Mangalore Ashok D R told the residents that their demands would be communicated to the deputy commissioner. Although the plant cannot be shut down, alternative measures such as acquiring land surrounding the plant or a green belt in the area will be discussed, he assured.
He also discussed the issue with the officials of MRPL.
