Juggling work and study, Bengaluru boys manage to crack CAT

December 28, 2014

Bengaluru, Dec 28: For the past four years, Swapnil Nagare had been juggling his work at a software company in the city with his preparations for the Common Admission Test or CAT.

Crack CAT

This year, however, he finally achieved his highest score of 99.9 percentile in four years and is hoping to land a seat at any one of the top three IIMs.

A number of candidates from the city who took the test in November have done commendably well, securing percentiles of 99 and above. The results of the test were declared on Saturday.

œThe first time I got a percentile of 99.4 and then in the second year I got a percentile of 85 and 96 in the third attempt. I hope to get into IIMs in Ahmedabad, Bangalore or Calcutta and want to study investment banking.

However, I am considering all my options, said Swapnil, who did his mechanical engineering from Mumbai.

He scored 99.7 percentile in quantitative ability and data interpretation (section 1) and 99.6 in verbal ability and logical reasoning (section 2).

Mohammed Riyaz Ahmed who secured a percentile of 99.8 wants to specialise in finance from IIM-B. An engineer from BITS Pilani (Goa campus), Riyaz was working in a city finance firm for the past two years and quit his job a month before the exam to prepare for CAT.

œJuggling became extremely difficult and I could not focus, so I had no choice but to quit, he said. Riyaz, from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, wants to become an entrepreneur in the primary education sector. Both his parents are school teachers back home.

He secured scores of 99 percentile and 99.38 in both the sections respectively.

For Rishab Gupta, who secured a 99.29 percentile in the test, a career in consulting or in a global leadership firm is what he is aiming at.

œI prepared for about six to seven months and used to study regularly during the weekends. I have been in Bangalore for nearly two years now, working in a management consulting firm and would, therefore, ideally prefer to study at the IIM here, said Rishab, who studied computer science engineering at BITS, Pilani.

He secured 95.6 and 99.6 percentiles in sections 1 and 2 respectively.

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Air India Express has announced that it will resume direct flight services between Mangaluru and Muscat from March 2026, restoring an important international air link for passengers from the coastal region.

Airport authorities said the service will operate twice a week—on Sundays and Tuesdays—from March 1. The initial flights are scheduled on March 3, 8 and 10, followed by March 15 and 17, with the same operating pattern to continue thereafter. The flight duration is approximately three hours and 25 minutes.

The Mangaluru–Muscat route was earlier operated under the 2025 summer schedule, with services beginning on July 14. At that time, Air India Express had operated four flights a week before suspending the service.

Officials said the summer schedule will come into effect from March 29, after which changes in flight timings and departure schedules from Mangaluru are expected. Passengers have been advised to check the latest schedules while planning their travel.

The resumption of direct flights to Muscat is expected to significantly benefit expatriates, business travellers and others, further strengthening Mangaluru’s air connectivity with the Gulf region.

Mangaluru: Public transport in Mangaluru is set for a state-led transformation as the government moves to deploy 100 new electric govt buses to replace unreliable private services. The initiative aims to provide a dependable alternative to private operators who have been frequently "cutting trips," leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

The announcement was made by Deputy Commissioner and MCC Administrator Darshan HV during a public phone-in session. The move specifically targets routes where private bus service has become erratic, ensuring that citizens no longer have to rely on a fluctuating private sector for their daily commute.

Restoring the Govt Presence

The transport crisis was brought to the forefront by Ramayya, a resident of Bajal, who highlighted a growing trend of private buses skipping morning and night trips. With the previous KSRTC (govt) services discontinued, residents have been left without a fallback option.

To fix this, the DC confirmed that the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme will bring 100 government-owned electric buses to the city:

•    Phased Deployment: The first 50 of the new 100 government buses are scheduled to arrive by March 2026.

•    State Infrastructure: Two new government depots, including one at Mudipu, are being prepared for operations.

•    Recruitment: The state has already begun training a new batch of government bus drivers to ensure the fleet is operational the moment it arrives.
